Meet the owner

When Ottawa Flowers owner Pavel Bogdanov steps into his store, he is surrounded by a verdant garden.Delicate purple orchids, boisterous yellow lillies and hardy pink African violets decorate a ledge on the wall. Pussy willows and ferns complement the vibrant colors. “We can order any plant in the world,” says Pavel.

The store is also stuffed with uplifting items; there are birthday balloons proclaiming “Happy birthday,” “It’s a girl” and “I love you” hanging by the counter, and vases and votive candelabra along the other wall.

In the back, two peach-coloured love birds serenade each other in a swinging cage. They’re Ottawa Flowers’ mascots, says Pavel. “Customers love it when they sing – they’re good for the soul.”

Pavel’s passion for plants goes back to his teen years, when his parents, the original owners, planted a seed in his mind by hiring him to clean the store and deliver flowers. “I loved watching their positive effects,” he says. Funeral wreaths help mourners deliver a final message to their loved ones, while wedding bouquets contribute to the day’s magic. Pavel was enrolled in commerce at university when his mother passed away, and he decided to take over the family business. "It's not just a business," he says. "My hand and my heart are in it."
