It could be more fun...

I have been here quite a few times mostly for drinks with friends but I have tried the food. I went there with a friend and we took a seat in the small patio area in the very core of the restaurant where you can hear the band play very clearly. The service was pretty slow, it was a busy night however. The food was ok, it was a little bit disappointing due to the reputation my friends who live in Ottawa had built up about the place while I was visiting. I realized it was not because of the food but because of the atmosphere. The Heart & Crown can offer a variety of experiences under the same roof. If you want an outdoor patio experience there are several patios. If you want to dance there is a generous dance floor that was packed with men and women every time I was there. If you want a pub experience well head down to the basement where things are a little more quiet. If you are into sports bars there is a sports bar themed area as well. I mean, it literally has everything under one roof. The problem with it is the bouncers are extremely strict and the bartenders will not hesitate for a second to call them over in the event you do anything to make them mad. It makes the atmosphere a little stressful because you don’t know if you are going to be kicked out for something stupid. It’s like you are hanging out with the popular kids in high school they’re treating you like you’re lucky to be there with them and if you don’t deal with their abuse then you’re gone. Some of the bouncers seem to think they are cops and are constantly talking on their radios scoping out any of the patrons who are deemed threatening, it’s like if they do not hand out enough tickets (or in their case kick enough people out every night) they will be in trouble, not get paid, or feel like they aren't doing their job. If The Heart & Crown’s management operated their bouncers or security personnel in a manner that made patrons feel safe and secure instead of being intimidated and bullied then the atmosphere would improve significantly.

Fun night out

Went for drinks only, don't know about dining at this place....Fun venue on an evening when there's a band playing. Love dancing with my hubby, especially when he's in the mood for it. Overall a fun evening

This is a bar and grill restaurant Irish-style pub and you can expect people who have had a few beers to get a bit rowdy at times. I like their mixed platter of finger foods - excellent. The owner is often there and some of the staff are family members and they do their best to do the extra mile for you when they can. Attentive service. They now have another restaurant on Preston Street in Ottawa and it has more space and a better atmosphere and I prefer to go there now.

We entertained guests from out of town at this cozy patio restaurant. The atmosphere was great, this restaurant links to different serving area (actually four different environments). There is a long street patio deck, two isolated rear hidden private decks, (great for business meetings), and a central open air patio that gives you a european feeling. The live music is great often with bands from Ireland or a Canadian Celtic pleasure. This mixed age croud of guests and open concept offers a welcoming friendly feeling. My guest completely enjoyed there evening and I was proud to have entertained them at this premier choice in casual dinning in the heart of Ottawa's Capital. Try it, you will like it!

Perfect restaurant patios for al fresco fare in Ottawa

Perfect restaurant patios for al fresco fare in Ottawa

Tourists choose the sprawling street-side patio of the Heart and Crown, a ByWard Market success story. Locals opt instead for the secluded courtyard behind Peter Devine’s, part of the Heart’s operation. The patio is among the prettiest in town: surrounded by ivy-covered walls and colourful flower baskets. Heaters bring comfort to chilly days. The menu is Irish pub grub. If you’re hungry, order the excellent fish and chips (one piece should fill most stomachs); the Shannon salad makes a good light meal. A tidy selection of brews includes Irish icons Guinness, Kilkenny and Smithwicks.
