Meet the owner

Mike Clark and Luke Pestl got to know each other pretty well while working together at a downtown Toronto brewery. It didn't take long before they realized they both had a dream of owning and operating their own brewery one day – and they figured their collective degrees in biochemistry and biochemical engineering would come in handy at some point!.

The two brewers decided on one of Ossington Avenue's quintessential mechanic shops and set to renovating. In addition to the brewery proper, they transformed the space to fit a spacious outdoor patio and a cozy indoor seating area with a second floor mezzanine overlooking the restaurant and brewhouse. Adding a bottle shop where passersby could pick up brews to-go until 11pm, Mike and Luke opened the doors to Bellwoods Brewery in April 2012, much to the delight of neighbourhood locals.

    Bellwood Brewery ...

Bellwood Brewery is hands down the best micro brewery in Toronto. Is full every single day of the year, and it's a great place to try high quality craft beer in a beautiful environment. You can sit in the patio in summer or winter, and check out the brewery facility indoors. They have a beer depot in the facility so you can buy beer before leaving - try witchshark IPA.

Situated on the hip Ossington Strip, Bellwoods Brewery is nearly always packed with Torontonians who love craft beer. One side of the building is a brewpub with a large (and popular) front patio and the other side is a bottle shop, which sells Bellwoods’ own creations (the hoppy Boogie Monster IPA and the complex Grandma’s Boy wild ale blend, for instance). In search of a sweet hostess gift? Bellwoods Brewery has their labels made by Doublenaut, an illustration and design company based in Toronto, so each one is super gift-worthy, both aesthetically and on the palette

Does your date like skinny jeans and Buddy Holly glasses? The Bellwoods Brewery is a high-end pub with a subtle hipster undertone. You can buy a $40 bottle of specialty beer from Belgium or stick with one of their more reasonably priced craft beers. Most of their menu is meant to be shared between diners and its intimate interior is sure to bring you and your date a little bit closer by the end of the night.

What she gets: A craft beer for a quick park buzz. Named for its proximity to the nearby park – one of the most famous in Toronto – this Ossington microbrewery and eatery is the spot to guzzle a cold and bubbly ale you’ve probably never tried before (Bellwoods hosts dozens of international and local craft beers). Peckish patio dwellers can also grab a quick lunch of gourmet local fare – think foie gras terrine, seared Albacore tuna, and salumi and cheese boards – before hitting the park.
