Meet the owner

Prior to the arrival of Comedy Bar, a utilitarian space in a Bloor west basement, co-owner and artistic director Gary Rideout Jr. lamented the dismal state of comedy venues in Toronto. His sketch troupe would perform at a venue, only to find the rug pulled out when their temporary home went under.

“We were losing venues to perform at in the city,” says Gary, “and a lot of the time, I felt that it was just a matter of them being mismanaged.”

Rather than continue to work for other people who didn’t fully appreciate or understand the local scene, Gary and his current business partner James Elksnitis decided to found Comedy Bar in November of 2008.
