I'm a regular so I've eaten pretty much...

I'm a regular so I've eaten pretty much everything there. It's a nice small family run restaurant that does a excellent job trying to stay true to a traditional Japanese cuisine. The sushi chef is always good for a friendly conversations at the sushi bar ... provided you speak Japanese as his English mostly covers the niceties. That said the service is great, and with a traditional flair. Don't be afraid to order the hot pot which is normally cooked at the table. They are more than willing to cook it for you. Occasionally, I've reminded them a few times that I am a regular and can handle it ok. As it is a family restaurant service can be a bit slow when it gets busy; but I find it one of the charms of the place. With the oil paper booths and quite music time seems to slow down and you get a chance to recover from your busy work week. The food is great and has a really authentic taste. Proportion are healthy sized and should and is filling . Some people may find the proportions a little small being used to non-traditional cooking and the triple sized proportions most restaurants serve these days. Daio is one of the few restaurants I can walk away from saying I'm satisfied and have more energy leaving; rather then a sluggish feeling requiring an hour of napping. Parking is difficult (as with anywhere downtown), however College Station is a 1 minute walk from the door. Whenever I have the chance to take TTC home from work, I stop in for sushi and a nice tea break. Prefect way to unwind from the day.

Overpriced, with ridiculously small portions. 15.50 for a bento box that had 5 little pieces of chicken (less expensive bentos at other restaurants come with 3x as much), and half as much rice and salad as is usual. Actual food quality did not make up for the higher price and smaller quantities. Ripped off.

Worst service ever! After being seated, we waited for 25 minutes for service when there were only 3 tables with patrons in there. Then just as we started ordering food, the waitress had the audacity to leave us (esp after we waited so long) and sit other customers who had just walked in. IMBELIEVABLE.

Daio is a quiet little Japanese restaurant located across from the Carlton Cinema. Step inside and it’s like taking a trip to Japan. Servers dressed in authentic kimonos bring tea and dishes with authentic ingredients such as sea urchin, pickled plum and burdock. You might be steps away from Yonge and College, but you’ll feel like you’re in Japan.
