Meet the owner

Mandy Kan says she's been a foodie since she was five years old. Born and raised in Hong Kong before immigrating to Toronto at age 11, she was immediately exposed to all kinds of international flavours – from French to Asian – at a very early age. Combine that with a naturally perceptive palate and culinary training at the prestigious French Culinary Institute in New York City and it’s no surprise she wrote her own ticket as a chef – so what made her choose desserts?

"I'm someone that's always striving for the best – either you don't do it or you do it all the way,” says Mandy. “I love desserts because it's like a science: either you go one way or you mess up the whole thing. Everything has to be perfect.”

Mandy refers to cookies as the perfect example: you have to mix the butter and the sugar together, but if you mix the sugar and eggs first and then add the butter, you won't get the chewy texture – just a super hard cookie. So for someone like Mandy who strives for excellence, desserts happen to be a perfectly unforgiving measure of her skill and creativity.

    Great desserts, great service

Been ordering cakes for birthdays and holidays for years from Dessert Lady. Strawberry shortcake is amazing. It's light and not too sweet. Everything is very fresh and the service has always been wonderful - even when I put in very last minute orders.

This Yorkville bakery has been creating baked treats for years and has developed quite the following. It offers two pies: crumble and classic; both are made fresh with Ontario apples. If there is a holiday around the corner, you may have to order in advance.

Matcha Tiramisu at Dessert Lady Café: The tiramisu here is everything tiramisu should be: fluffy, decadent, and oh-so-filling. The top layer of vanilla mascarpone cream is rich and slightly bitter because of the light dusting of matcha powder on top, but this only provides a great balance for the thick layer of honey-sweetened green tea ladyfingers. Together, they create quite the adventure for your palate. Dessert Lady also offers up their tiramisu in a cup, great for anyone on the run and craving a delicate dessert.
