Meet the owner

It all started when Michael Fresco was 14 years old. Working at a fast food joint in Montreal, he turned fresh-cut potatoes into delicious French fries and found he was hooked on cooking. Over the years, that passion only grew. “When I met my future wife, I invited her over for my veal scaloppini," he says. "She was shocked to realize hey, this guy’s an amazing cook!”

In 2010, Michael put his culinary talents to work. A friend was selling her fish and chips shop in Kensington Market, and Michael made an offer. With only eight seats inside, the place felt like a sweaty shoebox, but the fish and chips were so popular that Michael opened a second location on St. Clair West. Then, in 2016, when a 2,400 square foot space opened down the street on Augusta Avenue, Michael grabbed it. “We closed the deal and the very next day, Fresco’s was open for business again,” Michael recalls.

Small portion of fish and poor service. I paid for French fries not fish.

Lucky for you there are two locations to get Fresco’s fish and chips! The fish and chips comes in many different options, from the traditional haddock or halibut, to the battered salmon or crab cakes. Whether you head out to the St. Clair West location or stop by Kensington Market it’s bound to be some of the best fish and chips you’ve had.

A light batter and even lighter fish is still mighty satisfying, thanks to large pieces of fish. Select from haddock, cod, halibut, salmon, lobster and crab cakes and regular batter or Miss Vickie’s extra crispy batter - for an extra buck. The fries are superb, as is the coleslaw. There is also a variety of chicken (wings, boneless wings, tenders and sandwich), sandwiches and chilis, as well as sides (sweet potato fries, onion rings, deep-fried pickles, battered mushrooms, mozza sticks, poutine) available, which is great. But it’s the fish and chips (some of which is Ocean Wise approved) that’s the main attraction.

This fish 'n' chip shop has two locations – the original across from Kensington Park and the other at St. Clair West and Atlas Ave. Fresco's distinguishes itself thanks to a painstaking attention to quality. Owner Michael Fresco personally tested 300 potatoes before settling on the Ontario-grown Russet potatoes. Fresco's fish receives just as much care and attention. He uses only Oceanwise and sustainable fish, that he fries in a non-hydrogenated, trans-fat free mix of canola and corn oil. Fish not your thing? People also rave about Fresco's poutine.
