Meet the owner

Jin Ding can’t play a musical instrument, but the co-owner of Gate 403 Bar & Grill is a jazz star all the same.

Jin and her husband, Young, were both teachers in China before they immigrated to Canada in 1995. “We had no clue we would end up running a jazz bar,” Jin laughs, adding that she has no musical background beyond a love of jazz, blues and classical music.

Jin says she listens to the latter in her car on the way to and from Gate 403 on Roncesvalles Avenue — “to relax and wind down” — but the other two genres dominate her working hours. Indeed, since taking over Gate 403 in 1999, eight years after it opened, the Dings have turned it into what Jin calls “the place” to listen to live jazz and blues in Toronto’s West End. It may even be “the place” for these genres across the entire GTA, what with two acts hitting the stage every night of the week.

“There are a lot of bars and restaurants on Roncesvalles and in Toronto, so if you want to be successful you have to forge your own identity,” Jin says. “Ours is simple: We concentrate on live jazz and blues.”

Hip haunts to visit during the Toronto Jazz Festival

Hip haunts to visit during the Toronto Jazz Festival

This Roncesvalles jazz and blues club venue is a neighbourhood favourite with its affordable bar menu and live music throughout the week. Part pub, part piano bar, the laidback local hosts two shows a night for all 10 days of the Toronto Jazz Festival so there’s plenty of variety for music lovers. Highlights include the talented Denielle Bassels, who brings her neo-soul-meets-Amy-Winehouse sound to the stage on June 19, and Juno-winning singer, songwriter and piano player Julian Fauth who will perform on June 24.

Where to sip a glass of wine in Roncesvalles

Where to sip a glass of wine in Roncesvalles

This cozy jazz and blues bar is the perfect place to indulge in a glass of vino and enjoy the casual atmosphere. It’s the kind of venue where you’ll see people in blue jeans and black cocktail dresses – sometimes even at the same table. There’s music every evening of the week, so all you have to do is pull up a seat, order a glass of wine and enjoy the cool sounds.

Where to find satisfying sandwiches in Roncesvalles

Where to find satisfying sandwiches in Roncesvalles

This resto-pub makes having a sandwich on a Friday night impossibly cool, but no matter when you go, the experience is awesome with live jazz and blues music every evening of the week. For vegetarians, the Portobello sandwich (Bermuda onion, roasted peppers, fontina cheese, pesto aioli) is tops, while meat-eaters can challenge themselves with the triple-decker clubhouse (chicken breast, double pancetta, lettuce, tomato and guacamole). Pair either with one of the dozen beers on tap.
