Meet the owner

Since opening in 2009, the Green Beanery has always been more than just another coffee shop, carrying a incomparably diverse selection of coffee beans (100 varietals, to be exact), and coffee supply tools integral to the coffee-making process (including espresso machines, French presses, and pour-overs).

Basically, if you need anything to do with coffee, they’ve got you covered – and that includes doing custom roasting for their customers. Roasting is an integral part of the inspiration behind the business; it was an article about home roasting in the Wall Street Journal that got owner Lawrence (Larry) Solomon thinking, “I need to try this for myself!” The article mentioned a top-rated home roaster so Larry went out and bought it.

“Once I roasted my own beans, I couldn't believe how different fresh roasted beans were compared to the beans I'd been buying off the shelf,” he insists. “I thought others would feel the same so I decided to sell a sack of beans over the Internet as an experiment and the business took off from there.”

Keep your coffee game strong with a new French press or old-school espresso machine from this hybrid café and coffee supply store. A Toronto-wide favourite for a dizzying selection of fresh beans from across the world (all either fair- or free-trade organic), the quaint café on the corner of Bathurst and Bloor is also well known for its selection of coffee-making equipment. Such offerings include pourover coffee makers from Chemex, the complete Bodum glassware line, and a rare find: the Cafflano all-in-one coffee maker, which will grind your coffee, boil the water, and brew it, producing the perfect pourover to-go.

This coffee shop is as eco-friendly as its name suggests, but green also refers to the colour of the beans before they’re roasted. This enables them to keep fresh longer and remain available to roast to your exact specifications. This shop also deals in fair trade coffee so you can drink your espresso with a sound conscience. Pro tip: Popcorn makers are great bean roasters.
