Meet the owner

Michael Watson and Jason Bradfield often talked about how fun it’d be to own Mitzi’s Café. Tucked away on Sorauren Avenue, a sleepy side street in Parkdale, the brunch joint had been one of their haunts since the mid ‘90s. With its cool, shaded patio and arty, eclectic vibe, the two found themselves drawn to the place time and time again.

Still, no matter how much the topic came up casually, they’d never seriously planned on taking over one of their favourite eateries. But when Michael and Jason saw that the property was for sale in 2012, they acted ― albeit uncertainly at first. “We thought we’d just come in and kick the tires a bit, and before you know it we were asking for financials,” recalls Michael. “It sort of kept going and going and going until finally someone handed us the keys.”

Keys in hand, the newly minted co-owners touched up the café they’d so often visited as customers, taking care to stay true to its roots.

Nonetheless, as part of a renewal process, the eclectic purple, red and yellow colour scheme the two had come to know so well was replaced with a sleeker black, white and red motif inside and out, while creative flourishes like 1970s Fire-King Kimberly mugs and mismatched chairs echoed the Mitzi’s Café of old. “[We] tried to keep as much of what people love about it, but also kind of refresh it,” Michael says of the renovation process.

Mitzi’s Café serves all-day brunch, so not exactly a classic breakfast, but it’s so good we’re going to say ‘close enough.’ Mitzi’s Café’s brunch menu changes daily, as the menu is seasonal. Past favourites have included fluffy omelets, challah French toast, and buttermilk oatmeal pancakes. Plus, you get to see all the action in its open concept kitchen!

Breakfast here is colourful and tasty, as each dish looks like a little work of art to start your day. One thing you can be certain of is Mitzi’s doesn’t play by the rules. While you may be expecting eggs benedict to come with hollandaise sauce, they’ll go ahead and surprise you with lobster sauce on your poached egg instead. For those who don't eat meat or wheat, Mitzi’s has plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options that are sure to satisfy.
