I can't believe this is real

When we arrived at New Generation, there was a line of eight people in front of us. We considered going elsewhere but the line quickly disappeared and we were soon seated at a table near the back by a friendly employee. Drinks came quickly while we looked at menus. I ordered the Beef Bento Box, which includes miso soup, salad, six maki, and then, in the box itself, beef, dumplings, tempura shrimp and vegetables, and rice. The miso soup came almost immediately and was given to everyone at the table, even those who didn't order a bento box. I've never really cared for miso, but everyone else seemed to like it. The salad came just as we finished the soup; the maki right after the salad. The next course of the meal always came right on time, just as you finished the previous one. Best of all, there was not one stabbing the entire time we were there. Employees were too busy refilling our drinks. The bento box has great quantity and quality; none of us were able to completely finish it and everything was well-prepared. As I was finishing my tempura vegetables: What the heck? There was a spring roll hidden underneath. **** YES. This is the first time I've been pleasantly surprised by something unexpected in my meal. As we writhed around in our seats from eating too much delicious food, the waitress informed us that our complimentary green tea ice cream was on its way. A bento box costs just over $10. I can't believe this place is real.

best bento box EVER!

this place has the best bento box i've ever had and ive had many bento boxes. i got the salmon teriyaki, its about 7-9 inches long, amazing! i couldnt even eat it, i was too stuffed from everything else. i got the crunch roll instead of the maki, which was an additional $1.xx. it was worth it. the rolls were huge. the miso soup was very salty, but still good. the salad wasn't too great, but i still finished it. tempura was great. dumpling was also great. i finished everything but the salmon, i took it to go tho. the atmosphere was very nice and clean. service was always around and friendly. they tried to charge me extra for the pickled ginger, when i asked if i was being charged extra, i said no thanks. they proceeded to give it to me free of charge. i was happy with that, cuz i love pickled ginger. their open late, which is a huge plus for me. I'm huge on sushi and late night sushi is hard to find in Toronto.. this place is open super late, til 2am. will definitely go back and def recommend.

Long line ups, food is not even up to standards...

Long line ups, food is not even up to standards of other restaurants. Servers were alright, got free ika dishes but thought that was the only way to compromise for the lackluster quality of dining, and also, the food is overpriced. Sushi was very loose, i picked up with my chopsticks, and the whole thing fell apart, simply not attractive! Only thing that was OK was the cooked food. But Sushi is terrible, They should rename their restaurant to New Generation Cooking... This restaurant is not recommended at all!

Nice Food, Great Service

Was really stressed and needed a protein fix, so I decided on sushi. Very quick seating, then my order was taken and off we went. Oshitashi was OK, I've had better dipping sauces elsewhere but it certainly wasn't awful. Sushi was good, not top end fish but very good and the rice was nice. Salmon handroll was a bit boring (just chunks of salmon and rice), but what did I expect in a combo meal? Service was the standout here, quick service, removal of plates when finished, and even a complimentary bowl of ice cream at the end. For what it is (one of many sushi joints in the Annex) it's one of my favourites.

Sashimi tasted bad.

SO after deciding what i wanted, i went with the 20 dollar new geno bento box. When it came, The sashimi tasted real bad and usually i can finish about 10-20 pieces no problem. The sashimi had a very weird taste and i DID NOT enjoy it. The pieces of sushi i got in the bento box was was cut so thick i could not even fit it in my mouth. Too much rice. The service was alright, although i had to keep asking for water. The manager was very nice and kept telling me that my box would be there soon, but it didn't come for a while. Everyone at the table was half way done before i got my meal. I don't think i would go back to this place. There is a better sushi place in Kensington market.

So I have been visiting New Gen a lot lately, it is one of my favourite places to go, but i have a small criticsm. The space is crowded and there is a table right beside the kitchen which i get sat at sometimes, this also makes the restaurant very hot and sometimes uncomfortable when there is a lot of people. (there is always a lot of people). But other than that the food is plentiful and cheap, I will continue going untill i find a more spacious place!

The best valued sushi bar downtown, tastes great and at a low price. The only drawback might be the wait caused by the popularity! It was newly renovated recently and now even more comfortable to dine in. Even the wait in line isn't too long compared to some other places. They offer 10% student discount too!

Where to eat and drink in the Annex during Hot Docs

This cheap and cheerful Japanese joint is a popular choice among the area’s student population thanks to its affordable prices, fast service and relaxed atmosphere. In fact, a second location opened up just across the street in order to accommodate all of the sushi-loving locals. The menu offers an array of inexpensive sushi and sashimi combos, bento boxes, and warm entrees like chicken teriyaki for diners who don’t fancy raw fish.
