Meet the owner

When Queen Street West institution Terroni opened its doors in the early 1990s, the strip between Bathurst and Trinity Bellwoods Park was one of the scrappier parts of Toronto. At the time, it was lined with old-school Eastern European businesses or small, storefront art galleries (usually with the artists living in the back rooms).

“My brother Cosimo started Terroni in 1992,” says part-owner and general manager Vince Mammoliti. Rooted in the regional Southern Italian cuisine of their parents, the restaurant originally served panini and espressos, and sold a selection of imported Italian groceries (you can still take home such delicacies as imported pasta, olive oil and San Marzano tomatoes). “I started there less than a year later,” he says of his humble introduction to the business. “I was working part-time making coffee, washing dishes while I was going to school.”

“The neighbourhood has really grown up over the years,” says Vince. “People dress a little better, they drink better wine, eat better food. At the same time, the neighbourhood hasn’t become too commercial — it’s not just restaurants, but independent shops and galleries.”

The Queen West location itself has expanded to include an open-air patio in the summer months, a second floor, and even the space in the building next door. Still, there are lineups out the door most nights. Patrons include loyal locals, chefs and chow-hounds from across the country.

Horrible experience. Arrived on time for reservation, before we even sat down, we were told that we had to give the table up by a certain time. Placed our order and I asked for the salad dressing to be on the side. They refused to do this. I requested the manager (who clearly has no formal training) and they still refused saying that I am to taste the food as per their vision. Give me a break, Terroni is far from Michelin star restaurant...you are an Italian CHAIN. We left!

The good was over the top in my opinion and the server we had was very enjoyable. A dining experience I would repeat.

Terroni is an Italian restaurant that offers a plethora of pastas, pizzas, dolce and much more. The settings are very cozy: retro-style decoration, dimmed light and great atmosphere which make a good place to eat with a group of friends. On weekend, there's always a line-up but it's worth the wait! For the food itself, the pizzas were amazing: not too hard and not too soft. Since it's homemade, the bread were made differently with slim slices. The service was attentive and courteous.

Good but overpriced

This was a perfectly decent experience--the entrees and desserts were good. The service was quick and the patio we were served on was adorable. It was just too pricey, however.

simply not good

Ordered the tuna salad for a start which was nice but the main courses were not good. Had seafood pasta. Muscles and shrimp dry, stringy, and overcooked, one clam was rotton came out cold. The person I was with did not like his meal either comparing it to soggy cardboard with sauce. The restaurant itself is nice, but they just do not deliver on the food.

We go once a Month!!

This is a restaurant we frequent at least once per month. The specials are always amazing and the pizza is one of the best in the city. Staff is very helpful and knowledgable. The Queen Street location is the best of the Bunch. See you there!!

Italian Fare with an East German Flare (part 2)

(....Continued from above) Quickly realizing that further discussion was futile, both tables on either side of us requested their bills, and we did the same. When ours arrived, it was substantially cheaper than it should have been. Thinking that the manager had done this to make up for our experience, I added in a 25% tip on what the total should have been. After signing my receipt, the server came back to the table to explain she had run my card through on the wrong bill. When she returned with the correct bill (full amount), I requested the credit slip for the previous one and their copy of that original slip. She informed me that she had destroyed both, and would get the manager to explain. After a ten+ minute wait, he decided to grace us with his presence, give me his business card, and told me to call him if the charge wasn't actually reversed. I know this review won't make much of a difference as Terroni will be full (or pretend to be) no matter what people say. Just doing my part to let people know what they're in for. Not to mention, it felt good to get that off my chest.
