Meet the owner

Jud Ruhl is the man behind The 3 Speed, a cottage-like rustic pub located on Bloor. The 3 Speed pub was one of the first to open up shop on the street and the name was coined for the image of a girl riding by on a 3-speed bike on a beautiful summer day. The Bloor area used to be known as a cyclist's area, so the name was a great fit.

“I’ve been working in bars and playing in them for my whole life,” says Jud. “I used to work at the Communist’s Daughter when it opened, so it felt right to open up one of my own places. Bars and pubs have always been a big part of my life.”

Over time, The 3 Speed has become a popular gathering spot for Bloor residents and visitors alike. Jud notes that many of the other business owners in the area are friends, so it has become a tight knit community of people with eclectic tastes in food and music.

The best mussels in Toronto

The best mussels in Toronto

With an exposed brick interior and bustling outdoor patio, this place is the perfect spot for a summer night supper. The mussel selection at this eclectic locale changes from day to day, but mussels are always served piping hot with a side of toasted bread. Popular flavours include: white wine, garlic, lemon and rapini, creamy coconut milk with cilantro, pickled ginger and white wine.

No matter where in the city you live, Three Speed never fails to make you feel like you’re a Bloordale local. It might just be the inviting outdoor fireplace in the spacious back patio, but the service here is no slouch either: warm, inclusive and ready to suggest suitable drink pairings for the home-style cookin’, with offerings like handmade samosas and hangover-curing mac ‘n’ cheese with fried chicken.

Toronto's coziest restaurants and bars

Toronto's coziest restaurants and bars

In the dead of winter, Blansdowners can be found sipping cocktails and munching eclectic fare (from mussels to samosas to smoked salmon tacos) at this red-hued bar – or they’ll be found on the huge back patio drinking down a craft beer next to the stone hearth fireplace (yeah, no wonder it won NOW’s best bar of Toronto in 2015). If you’re sold but looking for something a little farther south, check out the oh-so compact Communist’s Daughter at Dundas and Ossington or Wallflower in Parkdale – they’re just as cozy-charming and run by the same owners.
