Meet the owner

When childhood friends Kerry Butt and Meg Watson decided to open a lifestyle store in Parkdale, they wanted pay tribute to their grandmothers. Kerry picked her grandmother’s first name, Frances, and Meg used her family name, Watson and thus, The Future of Frances Watson was born.

Since opening its doors in 2010, the store has become Parkdale’s go-to destination for quality denim, classic menswear and avant-garde women’s fashion. Co-owner Kerry was previously running a vintage shop just two doors down from Frances Watson’s current location, when the space (a drycleaner at the time) came up for rent. She was already featuring Montreal-based Japanese denim brand Naked and Famous and had seen the potential for growth. “I was a little over vintage,” Kerry explains. “I always sold denim and it always did really well, so I was looking to make it more of a focus with the new store.”

She approached Meg about starting a shop that would specialize in designer classics and unique statement pieces. “I wanted to partner with Meg because she had been the manager of a ton of other stores and was already working as a stylist,” Kerry says.

Today, a stunning twenty-foot antique mirror and smattering of other vintage finds add a distinct decor to the massive space, which has a much loftier feel than the quintessentially tiny boutiques along the Queen West strip. “When people come in, we want them to feel like the can live in the space,” Kerry says, “and in turn, live in the clothes we sell.”
