The best vegan and vegetarian brunch in Toronto

The best vegan and vegetarian brunch in Toronto

Almost everyone in the west end loves the southern-style comfort food at the Hogtown Vegan – the vegan fare is positively droolworthy, whether you rock a plant-based or omnivorous diet. Try the vegan unchicken and waffles, fried tofu “egg” omelets (which are stuffed with caramelized onions, mushrooms, daiya cheese and fresh herbs). The PB & banana French toast is accented with tofu bacon that adds a crispy, salty flavour to cut the sweet. With an atmosphere that reads laidback local with a hint of dive bar, it’s way too easy to while away the afternoon in one of Hogtown’s sun-washed booths.

Vegan and deep fried food can be the perfect combination and is found on the dessert menu at Hogtown Vegan. Choose either the fried apple pie, a deep-fried apple hand pie served with vanilla soy ice cream, or the deep-fried banana split, with battered and fried bananas, served with coconut milk ice cream and dark chocolate sauce. Whichever you choose it is sure to be a delectable dessert!

Best Restaurants for Vegan Fare in Toronto

Best Restaurants for Vegan Fare in Toronto

Hogtown Vegan was the first vegan restaurant where I didn’t miss meat. Their “chicken” in the Unchicken and Waffles ($14) isn’t “mock” chicken and tastes like chicken. In fact, the mouthfeel is replicated too. Shiitake Fried “Clams” ($8) might be a basket of breaded, fried shiitake mushrooms, but you’ll sure feel like you’re on the Cape. Even dishes without a “meat” component like the Tortilla Salad ($11) with crisp romaine, black beans, diced tomatoes, guacamole, corn tortillas, sunflower sour cream and scallions in a chili-lime dressing, are divine.
