Dare to drink bittersweet Negronis at these Toronto bars

Dare to drink bittersweet Negronis at these Toronto bars

This historic bar inside the Royal York Hotel feels as though it has been plucked from another era. The sumptuous furnishings, dark wood interior and leather-bound cocktail list are in stark contrast to the modern establishments around the downtown. In keeping with the library theme, cocktails are inspired by Canadian literary figures. The Negroni — a mix of tequila, Campari and sweet vermouth with a grapefruit twist — is named after Toronto Star columnist Linwood Barclay. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if the drink — which is sharp with a bitter finish — accurately reflects its namesake.

Sip on Manhattans at these Toronto cocktail bars

Sip on Manhattans at these Toronto cocktail bars

Situated inside the historic Royal York Hotel, this storied bar feels like a step back in time with its elegant Edwardian-style drapery, dark wood-paneled walls and plush oversized armchairs. The leather-bound drinks list relives the golden age of cocktails with its selection of classic libations aptly named after the country’s esteemed authors. Mordecai’s Spiced Manhattan (an ode to the legendary author, screenwriter and essayist Mordecai Richler) features a seductive blend of Woodford Reserve bourbon, house-spice infused vermouth and cherry bitters. Garnished with Amarena cherries, this CanLit-inspired libation is a sweet-and-spicy indulgence.
