Picking just one pastry from the display case at The Tempered Room is the ultimate test of self-restraint. The perfectly glazed brioche Suisse looks no less delicious than the pistachio cherry éclair or the pear tart with smoked crumble. And then there are the quiches, and the flan, oh, and the jalapeño cornbread. After a few minutes of contemplation, it quickly becomes clear that even choosing only two pastries will be a struggle.

With an eye for precision and a disdain for the mundane, French-trained chef Bertrand Alépée has created a line up of tempting pastries reminiscent of an art installation. What’s missing, however, is the pretentious attitude that often accompanies this level of handiwork. “I’m always trying to keep it fresh,” explains the multi-tasking creative mind behind pastry shop. “It’s part of the fun. I want the client to come, and there’s always something different.”

Where to get éclairs in Toronto

Where to get éclairs in Toronto

The Tempered Room is a Parkdale patisserie showcasing Parisian pastries in a hip café environment. Flaky éclairs are filled with creams and custards and easily devoured. The Tempered Room is also known for its tarts, mouse cakes, savoury croque monsiers, puff pastries and more (and with expertly rendered espresso-based drinks, it’s pretty hard to leave without something that’s entirely delicious). Plus, with its warm, wood-clad interior, exposed brick and high ceilings, this is the perfect blend of Toronto cool and Paris chic.

Party in Parkdale Part of the Culinary Event series of Summerlicious, Tapas in Parkdale on Friday July 17 is a cocktail reception instead of the usual dinner and goes late – 8pm ‘til 11pm. A collab between Chef Scott Vivian (Beast Restaurant) and Chef Bertrand Alépée (The Tempered Chef), the meal consists of a harvest table full of savoury hors d’ouevres by Chef Vivian and sweet selections by Chef Alépée. Cocktails and a DJ round out the night for an experience you’re sure to remember. Tickets are $45 ( taxes and gratuity).

If you want a French pastry like no other, just visit The Tempered Room. Passion Chocolate Marzipan, Pistachio Maraschino Cherry, and Banana-Nutella Éclairs! Flaky, buttery Amandes and Chocolatines aux Amandes Croissants! There are savoury items available as well, but something tells me you won’t be able to resist the Fianciers, Amandines, Coconut Macaroons, Flan and just about everything on the menu. J’adore.
