Meet the owner

Founded in 1999 by sisters Cynthia Funk and Kimberley Sopinka, The Yoga Sanctuary is a grassroots studio on College Street that has grown organically. It’s a place that cultivates community interaction among those passionate about yoga.

The studio’s inception came through a vision of having a central workplace.

“I was teaching yoga, and I was driving all over the city and Kimberley was working in administration,” says Cynthia. “I thought it’d be really nice to open a studio with Kimberley as my partner.”

As best friends and sisters, they knew they could combine their skills to create a positive space where they would enjoy working.

Kimberley notes that yoga has become big business; she is eager to preserve and maintain the purity and integrity of the practice as it was when she entered the field 15 years ago.

How would you rate this business?

I have been studying with The Yoga Sanctuary for going on 8 years. I find the teaching staff to be amazing. They are knowledgeable and approachable. The classes are amazing and you have enough space to move in your asanas without bumping into your neighbour yogi. I love this studio. Linda

One of the best things about this studio is not just the variety of disciplines it offers (although that’s pretty impressive) but the fact that the schedule accommodates both early birds and night owls. Weekdays, classes start nearly at dawn, with the last one taking place when most people are having post-dinner drinks. The weekend also offers a flexible program, albeit with reduced hours. Pick and choose from Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Yin-Yang yoga classes, plus Pilates for core strength.

This renowned studio takes a holistic approach to both the mind and body. In addition to the diverse schedule of Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga classes, visitors are also encouraged to try out a number of wellness services, including a two-hour restorative Reiki flow session that focuses on healing the body while promoting inner peace. The College Street location is housed inside a grand ballroom with soaring ceilings and tons of natural light. In fact, the Group of Seven once used the picturesque space as a painting studio. New members can sign up for $30 for 30 days of unlimited yoga.
