To Whom It May Concern; I have been a 'twice a year regular plus' for 15 years with 2 specific friends, coming from Toronto. Until our recent visit I/we have been most happy with every choice of food. Most fulfilling and delicious. Something has changed dramatically in the last while (June 2012). Untrained but pleasant servers-always placed the order in front of the wrong person (just 2 of us!). The food was unpalatable: A main salad offering spinach (wilted), candied nuts (decent amount and tasty) fruit (?) and blue cheese (THREE minute squares which had to be searched for). The quesadillas were totally soggy/mushy: not the usual expectation of a crisp crust. The cheese was not identifiable-perhaps Cheese Whiz??? The accompanying salad so-so fresh but for the crisp julienned vegetables on top. Will not return. New ownership???

Great spot

The establishment has an owner operator that really understands what their doing. Their experience is easily transparent with their attention to detail. Food and wine is why you visit this place and their staff will compliment the experience. When you want a downtown, know what their doing place to go and you live in the burbs, this is it. I think their only downfall is the lack of diners today outside of the city that will " get" this place

disappointing service!

I had gone with my husband for dinner this evening. It started off with the hostess asking if we had made a reservation (which we did) and not finding our name. She sat us at a table right up the stairs facing a brick wall. We asked the waiter if it was possible to sit close by to the window on the opposite side where there was no one else sitting; he said it should be fine but he would check to see. We were there from 7-9pm and the tables were definitely not booked. Our waiter seemed pleasant in the beginning,he took our drink orders and brought it to us shortly afterwards. But the busboy seemed to be more attentive than our waiter through the rest of the night, he served us more bread, gave us our black pepper for our food and sugar for our coffee. Not once did our server ask us how our appetizer or main course was. I think he was surprised we ordered coffee and dessert afterwards. We thought the food was very good. My husband is in the restaurant business and a chef as well, we know how important good service is to an establishment. We did spend $145 for dinner and gave only $15 in tips due to lack of service. I doubt I will be recommending your restaurant to any of our family or friends.

Still Excellent

I reviewed this a couple of months back. We returned a few days ago. We had really good food and service before, and we had similarly excellent food and service again this time. Our waitress/Md was her usual charming and professional self. The pizza was 'crispy' just as ordered, and the steaks were pink and perfect. Prices perhaps a little high; but no complaints....worth every penny.

Excellent evening

Previous reviews must be somewhat old. This evening five of us had dinner at BB and it was really good. Most had the romaine (caesar) salad and the lettuce was crisp and fresh and the dressing excellent. I had the steak...a little thin but still medium as ordered...not excellent but certainly not bad. The fingerling potatos were first class. The special was medallion of beef.....really good. The deserts were OK. The Chardonnay at $35 was a good buy. The service was attentive... the Chinese lady who is probably the M'D was as usual gracious and efficient. No complaints with respect to service. All in all I would thoroughly recommend BB for a good evening with good food, good service and of course a really great atmosphere.

Definitely used to be a good spot...not anymore

I don't think I'll ever return to this spot unless I hear some REALLY good things... Used to go here at least once a week then things started going downhill. The servers keep changing and they seem inexperienced and not trained properly. The food was not good either - I'm pretty sure mine was like a frozen dinner or something. We'll see if the place sticks around or not...

This USED to be a great place, we had not been in a couple of years and when I read the reviews I thought there must be a mistake. NO mistake, The Whole Wheat pasta with Italian sausage, not something you can easily screw up, sausage was a reheat and tough to chew. The special 'surf and turf' advertised as an 8 oz filet, ( 2 OZ WOULD BE EXAGGERATING) which was cold, and a half lobster which was ok. Service was impersonal and slow, not even a good night or thank-you from the server. We were early in the evening so it was not backed up, no excuse for reheats. Osso bucco was an obvious reheat as well. Rack of lamb was well received and properly cooked. Deserts were ok. Overpriced at 300.00 with tip

great place

so many people think its overpriced and all that, but one has to realize that this is a big tourist attraction in unionville, its a lot of new people every time but mostly the same people come all the time and most are rich and do not worry about expensive food. I will admit it is an expensive restaurant for the food, but it is still great! Chefs are awesome people if you get to know them, hilarious! only problem is food portions are very small considering the cost. Definitely a must visit!

Excellent Evening

I think some of the previous reviewers must have struck a bad night. Our experience was quite different. It was first class; prompt professional service and good food served without delay. We had a most enjoyable evening at a reasonable price.

The place was HOT, but not what you're thinking

Went last Saturday for the first time. We got stuck upstairs. They clearly have a ventilation issue as we were seated around the corner from a cool area - although where we were seated was like a sauna. Service was SLOW. Waiter left his personality at home, if he even had one. Order my beef medium. Came medium-well, leaning more to well. He asked if he could fix it -- took 30 minutes+ to get it the first time. I said No. He brought a bottle o f water I guess as a way to make up for it. Wasn't worth anywhere near $35, especially with the tiny little shrimp (4, I think) on top. Long wait. Lousy waiter. Mediocre food. We tipped accordingly. Won't be going back any time soon.

food was fine up to when we found hair in pasta, told the server but looks like did not care much since he did not tell the manager about it. servers did not have smile in face, as they are forced to work there. no refund or another offer re hair in pasta, since manager was not told about it. paid full 20% tip just because, but will not go back, i have seen much, much better service elsewhere.

How do you mess up caesar salad - 70% wilted...

How do you mess up caesar salad - 70% wilted, brown lettuce. How do you mess up tomato/boccancini salad - miniscule amount of cheese - no basil (not one leaf). The crostini with pear and brie was so overly done with cinnamon it tasted like pie - terrible pie. We sent one salad back with a busboy and the waiter took 20 minutes to see if we'd like another. We were only one of three tables in the place on a busy Saturday afternoon in Unionville (that should have been our first clue) and there were at least 6 wait staff talking about their weekend plans. What a shame - it's a nice old venue even if it could use a facelift, nice looking menu and location. Please someone take the reigns.

On arrival the chef from the open kitchen...

On arrival the chef from the open kitchen informed us of the specials that were available and then the hostess seated us upstairs in a lovely candlelit dining room beside a fireplace. The server was attentive and drinks came quickly - our appetizers were excellent and tasty. Main courses arrived in an appropriate time so that we could enjoy our wine without feeling rushed. Lamb was the best we've ever tasted and the gnocchi had an excellent sauce. To finish with our dessert was homemade and not too big, just enough to share - perfect!

Wilted salads,mushy pasta,and overcooked steak was the order of the day.The so called chef talks too much and he is loud.He should go back to school and learn the basics.We paid too much for what we got.Terrible experience.

Servers were friendly and were not pushy at all - Food was FANTASTIC!! The portions were a little on the large size, but it was great to enjoy leftovers the next day!!! I have been three more times, still the food is great and servers very pleasent....each guest I brought, felt they were more then happy with the Blacksmith Bistro and would be returning themselves. Thanks for all the great meals!!!
