Symposium used to be one of my favourite places to eat in Waterloo. After going there for brunch with my family this morning, I will never go back. I'm not sure whether it is under new management or what, but one of the best restaurants in the city is now a complete farce. Portion sizes are a fraction of what they used to be for the same price. Service is awful, in fact one couple seated near us complained to the staff that they had been seated for over half an hour and nobody had been around to take their order. They seem to have hired their kitchen staff directly from McDonalds as anything other than dropping potatoes in a fryer appears to be too difficult for them. The first omelette I received (supposedly 3 eggs, more realistically 1-2 eggs) was burnt on the outside and still raw in the centre. The second omelette to come out was even more charred on the outside and still just barely cooked through the middle. Lettuce on the plate looked to be a day short of spoiling. Never again.
My sister-in-law and I go out every month for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We had been to the Cafe for lunch a few months back and were pleased. We saw that they had different specials every night of the week so we thought we would go back for the two for 40$ dinner. They stuck us in a back corner. Someone was unloading and unpacking boxes right near us. Even though we were having the night special, it was d elayed. At least the waiter came to us to apologize for the wait. They had 3 specials to choose from. At 5pm one was already sold out!! The food was only luke warm when it came. The array of vegetables was good but all on the raw side as opposed to al dente. I had the pot roast which was grizzily or too crispy - I had 3 small pieces. Behind us was someone up on a ladder to fix a speaker which was distracting but when he started hammering that was bad!! Then a group of waiters started moving tables around they needed a group of 8 and were moving around groups of 2 to achieve this. Instead of picking up the chairs and moving them. They dragged everything - a loud noise indeed. The waiter was attentive but always interrupting us. Never waited until we stopped talking. Now dessert was great! Thankfully as most of my meal was still on my plate. My sister-in-law had the poached salmon with hollandaise. The rice was not hot and she felt that the asperagus was raw. We got to share a dessert for that special but the piece was large enough. Then coffee and tea. The waiter was pushing us to finish which we were glad to do as they had re-arranged the tables a second time so that this large group was now behind us. Very noisy. We left no tip just our 40 for the food. We wrote our complaints on the back of the bill. Whether or not it was handed in I don't know. We did speak to another waitress before we left. She offered to fetch the manager but we're not going back so no point. I couldn't wait to get home to have something to eat.
I've been here several times and it seems to be hit and miss. It must depend on who is in the kitchen. Sometimes the food (and beverages) are great, and other times it's incredibly mediocre. I have had more things that I have listed, but I can't remember all of them right now.
WILL NEVER GO BACK! At first i was pleased with the atmosphere until we were stuck in a corner of the restaurant that had too many tables crammed together and surrounded by loud students. I had ordered the cream of broccoli soup and new york grilled steak, Mmmm i thought. The soup was overcooked and slightly curdled, and literally 1 minute after receiving the soup we had got our main courses which nearly didn't fit on our small table. The vegetables were still dirty and the potatoes had no herbs our spice on them and the steak was oily (obviously pan fried, not "grilled"). Halfway through the steak i found it was too rare to eat, I had ordered medium rare. After being asked by the waitress how the meal was I politely told the waitress of the situation she apologized and said I would get a new steak. She came back only too say the kitchen was too busy and that they could cook the half again. Disappointing! Later whom i believed was the manager or owner came by asking how the meal was, and i said OK. I told him what i thought he had not apologized and just said they were very busy, he offered me a 10% discount on our next purchase at the restaurant.
After being sick and tired of the same old, me and some friends decided to try something new. Something new for us was Symposium. The food was OK. Nothing spectacular, but not horrible either. Their rose sauce on my pasta was a bit bland, but adequate. The service, however, was just atrocious. Our waitress, while nice, was completely useless. She took our drink orders about 10 minutes after we sat down, then returned with them approximately 20 minutes after that. Our food order went in probably 25 minutes after that. Our appetizers came out about 40 minutes later. Our entrees came out about 3 minutes after the appetizers. All in all we spent over 2 hours there just to get through our meals, get our bills, and pay them. What a waste of an evening.
If you're in the mood for terrible service and mediocre food, by all means feel free to go to this establishment. I met up with two friends who had arrived five minutes before I did. They had already ordered their drinks so I thought I could just place my order for a drink when our server dropped off their drinks. It took ten minutes for two martinis and when they were brought to the table, the server looked at me and said she'd be right back to take my order. She didn't come back after another ten minutes so I went up to the bar to order. A different server brought me the drink - seven minutes later. The only saving grace was that they comped my beverage. Please avoid this place - the service is TERRIBLE!!!!
I am baffled as to how a place like this is still open. The service is horrible, the food is horrible and everything takes forever. I went with so co-workers here on a Saturday night. Granted it was busy but we were lucky to even get a waiter. The staff seem uninterested and generally don't care. One person actually had a chipped glass. By the time we did receive our food - it was cold! We told the waiter and he just shrugged his shoulders. He didn't even offer to heat it up or anything. Worst place in Waterloo, hands down!
Their food is ok, but too overpriced. Atmosphere was quite nice. Consistancy is top-notch. Overall, a very plain restaurant. The only thing that would lure me back again would be the desserts.
I just found out that my friend's burger was also burnt! How can you go wrong cooking something as simple as a burger? Totally incompetent chef and inept service. Take your dining dollars elsewhere for a better bang for your buck, and don't look back.
Awful food - ordered the Warm Spinach & cheese dip, Firecracker shrimp and breaded calamari from the Happy Hour Menu, Crab Cake Sandwich and Cheeseburger with Mushrooms and Asiago Cheese from the regular menu, and Mocha Crunch Cake for Dessert. The Breaded Calamari was rubbery, and it was ordered on the recommendation of the server, who claimed that the Pan Seared Calamari wouldn't be prepared well and would be rubbery! He didn't offer to replace the calamari when told about it either. The firecracker shrimp were small, and just had hot sauce added to the tomato sauce. The Warm Spinach and Cheese dip was served with nachos and pita bread, and although it was the best of the lot, it was meh - basically thawed frozen spinach, some mayo and cheese over top. The Crab Sandwich's patty was too small, compared to the sandwich. The Cheese Burger with Mushrooms and Asiago Cheese had a lot of toppings, but was too big to bite into and had to be eaten with a knife and fork. The person that had it felt it sitting in her stomach long afterwards. The Mocha Crunch Cake was disappointing because it was dry and stale, although care was taken to order a slice from a cake that looked relatively new which was not already sliced too much. I have been here just a few days ago, and had another cake which was sent back because of the same problem, and was replaced with a moist chocolate mousse cake instead. Service was disinterested - our waiter didn't bother asking how our food was, and sat down to have his own dinner from the table across from ours. We had to get up to get the cheque, and again to pay the bills too. Although the ambiance and decor was nice enough, the over-priced tasteless food and poor service will not entice us to return.
So, I went into the Symposium about a year ago and really enjoyed it. Our server was great and the manager with the blonde hair (Kate?) was very welcoming. I've been meaning to go back, but it would have been better left as a happy memory! First of all, my group had 6 in it, which in most restaurants would be fine. However, some older gentleman sat us at a table for 4, and we had to squeeze in extra chairs to fit all of my friends. I had called to make a reservation, and was told that although they only took reservations for groups of 8 or more, they would be able to accomodate us. Wrong. Not only were we squished into our table by a rather rude man, it then took 10 minutes to even place our drink order. When we received our wine, it wasn't what we ordered, so we had to wait for our server to bring us the right bottle. Then after waiting 55 minutes for luke warm appetizers, we left and went elsewhere for our actual dinner. Sorry Symposium, we wont be back.
I have been to the Symposium a few times, usually it's satisfactory, but this one was terrible! I took a girlfriend there for breakfast and considering we were the only ones in the place, our food took forever! I'm pretty sure that the waitress forgot to even punch in our order, which would have been fine except when I asked to speak with the manager, a woman came over HOLDING A CHILD in her arms and gave us a cookie for waiting! Unbelievable! This kid was running around all morning, we couldn't believe our eyes. Thanks for trying, Symposium, perhaps you should set up a day care service...we wont be back!
I've been to Symposium a few times. The waffles are among the best I've had, crisp and fluffy and piled high with very nice fresh fruit. Their roasted vegetable wrap was also very tasty. The fresh fruit freezies are delicious and refreshing. Service is spotty. The last time I was there, we waited several minutes before anyone so much as made eye contact. Eventually we were taken to a table, where we waited 50 minutes for our food. My eggs were lukewarm, and my girlfriend's omelette was missing the cheese she had ordered, though it appeared on the bill. Our server was very friendly, though.
I had to wait about 25 minutes to even be approached by the waiter, while he continued to serve all other customers on the patio. Later when I finally ordered the calamari - it was so terrible i had to send it back (something I have not done at a restaurant in years). It was hard and rubbery while the batter was bland and tasteless. Avoid this place at all costs.
The Symposium used to be a good restaurant. I made the mistake of taking my friends in for a visit and was terribly embarassed. Our drinks took so long to arrive, the appetizers were served at the same time as our entrees and considering we're paying $20 for steak, they should learn how to cook it. Our spinach dip was greasy and the ribs were very dry. We had an overall a bad experience, and when I asked to speak to the manager about it, I was told by the server that he was too busy to talk to me. I won't be back and I don't recommend that you go either.
Breakfast can be tricky. Everyone knows what good bacon and eggs are supposed to taste, look, and smell like. Symposium did a great job on all three aspects despite my and my breakfast companion's "extertise" in the area. The hollandaise sauce on my eggs benedict was a good consistency and served in proper proportion to the egg/ham/muffin which it topped (some places will drench your plate in the stuff - which I obviously prefer less). My friend had the waffles and couldn't stop telling me to give them a try - they were that good! And to top it off, the service was phenomenal! Our server introduced herself to us in a friendly manner (a rare thing in these parts). She then proceeded to check on our table in adequate intervals and served our food promptly and courteously. I couldn't have asked for a better morning pick me up.
Great food, great prices, nice decor, comfortable chairs and amazing service!!! Can't wait to go again!!!!
average everything. Nothing amazing but nothing below par.
The last few times I've been to Symposium it has been VERY busy. No matter how long the line up is at the door we always wait for a table and always love our visit. Everyone was so accomodating even though it was busy. I will keep coming back!
The coffee was extremely bitter and lukewarm; the torte tasted stale and had way too much whipping cream for my liking. Service was on the poor side, though the staff did accommodate our requests. I thought food and beverages were overpriced on the whole. I would go again, but I would order an appetizer instead of dessert.
