food good, result not

The salmon sushi was beautiful. Red snapper, not so great. Tempura was very limited in type, but tasty. Sadly, the largest impression was made by my rumbling tummy 5 hours later. 3 days later I am still cancelling life. Shigella is the defined culprit. I know, so sad. Handwashing is a beautiful thing. Having reviewed my travels of the day, and considering I have a handwashing OCD myself, this is the only way I can explain how I came in contact with such, eating raw food that was prepared by human hands.

Not a Family Friendly Restaurant

This is not a family freindly restaurant. While this was not our first visit, it will be our last. The service was not welcoming, good and would classify as rude. We had two children with us, who had been there before more than once. They brought us a lollipop before the meal to keep our son from 'being loud'. I am very sensitive to how loud my children are and they are very well behaved in restaurants. EVERY TIME they came to the table they made a comment about the kids, who were eating and enjoying themselves. If my kids were going in and out of the booths, walking around on the benches, crying or fighting, yes, I agree not pleasant. But this was a pair of well behaved children at a slow restaurant during lunch.

This would be my third choice of Sushi in Whitby

I've tried three Sushi restaurants in Whitby, and out of the three this would be my third choice. Don't get me wrong, the food and Service is good, however the other two restaurants have better selection and atmosphere. Definately worth checking out.

The place was half full when we arrived. Food First - We took the All-U-Can-Eat: Sashimi are GOOD, FRESH, and we re-ordered all the sashimi again. I'm a big fan of Spider Maki "it was GOOOD" but the rice was too much. Kids love the Miso Soup and Edamame. We ordered cooked food for kids. Teriyaki Chicken was ok but the Jap rice was just ok (only my son liked it). Service: We asked to serve the cooked food first before the Sushi. Not sure if they understand what we asked for but we got the Sushi and Sashimi first kids had to wait for cooked food after we finished the 10 pieces of Sashimi . We asked for the cooked food 3 times they served it after 20mins for the kids. Yes we would visit again because it's local to me, good food. But if we bring the kids again. We will order the cooked food first and then order the sushi on the second order.

We've been going here for years. We went often enough that we should have been recognized, but we weren't sure if we were or not. There are some inconsistencies - sometimes we get a little amuse-bouche of picked vegetables, sometimes we don't. We generally have the AYCE dinner, so I can't comment on anything else. In general I found the food great - it was one of the first AYCE sushi places in Whitby and the service, though a little slow was always friendly. I will say that sometimes the rolls are not necessarily put together very well, but I generally stick to sashimi anyway.

As far as Japanese restaurants in the area go...

As far as Japanese restaurants in the area go (including other sushi and/or all-you-can-eat places), this one's among the better ones. There's enough variety in the menu to warrant return visits, and plenty to choose from if you the all-you-can-eat route. Three kinds of fried rice, including a seafood option, set it apart from other similar establishments. Also, the house salad dressing is quite nice (if you're okay with sweet dressings). The pork cutlet, beef short ribs, and teriyaki chicken are all good. The spring rolls and edamame are decent. But the tempura is sometimes undercooked and the chicken karaga is just... wrong. Sushi presentation could be better but the taste is just fine. You'll also find the staff friendly, but sometimes on the slow side, especially if it's busy.

Decent experience, worth a try is you like Japense

I have been here a few times. My husband loves the place and always get the all you can eat sushi. I have had all you can eat sushi sometimes, and others I have had chicken teriyaki and/or tempura. The chicken can be a little fatty so I suggest ordering just white meat... otherwise the dark meat is a little fatty. Good portions, sushi is fine, the tempura is good. The ambiance is nice with the little private booths that are quite neat. If you like Japanese food it is worth a try, but don't expect to be dazzeled, just enjoy the uniqueness.

Worst sushi I have EVER had!

The service was so so - waitress forgot our tea orders and had to be reminded. Sushi was a disaster - the rice was not sticky and did not hold together - thus creating a mess! The rolls were also very tiny and not put together well. I will definitely never return to Kyoto House as there are other sushi places in Whitby that are far better. Even though this place is cheap it is not worth it.

I've been going here for so long they've got to recognize me by now! Great sushi for a great price. I would gladly bring any of my friends here for a sushi feast! The yam tempura, spicy salmon, miso soup and green tea ice cream are my favourites here! Mmmm.

I went here with my brother and it was probably the worst all you can eat sushi place I have ever gone to. The service was pretty slow but the issue at hand was the food. The rolls were very loosely put together and the quality of the food was quite poor. It was pretty cheap though (approx. 12-14 inc. tip) but I don't think it's worth it... I'd rather pay the extra couple of dollars and get some decent sushi.

Wonderful menu and timely service, as well as an excellent value, which is something that matters more and more in these days. Fiancee and I went with my sister who was in town visiting, and we had a great time. While I realize that English may not be their native tongue, I don't believe that giving them a bad rating on this site because of that fact is valid, and would seriously recommend anyone who is considering an excellent sushi experience to ignore any poor reviews based upon the communication skills of the staff - that's simply ignorant and racist.

We've eaten at Kyoto House more times than I can count. The service is sometimes uneven, since it can get quite busy, but the food is always fresh and well-presented. I have eaten in Toronto and Markham sushi places, and although Kyoto House doesn't offer much in the way of exotic dishes - I think because the AYCE menu is so popular - it's still the first restaurant that we head to for a family night out.

Having had sushi throughout Toronto (including Markham) as well as at Kyoto House, I can say that the Kyoto House is great. I have had both good and bad downtown, but here the food is consistently good. The price for all-you-can-eat is $20 per person, and is always great.

I've only been living in Whitby (Durham Region) for one year, but, being a sushi lover, I was quick to check out Kyoto House. I think the sushi here is amazing (the Miso soup and tempura is nice as well). If you go a bit earlier for lunch you are guarenteed a table and fast service. The all-you-can-eat selection is excellent, and the sushi is very fresh and delicious. The staff are very accomodating, and they already know me as a "weekly" regular. I can't say enough good things about this place. I've already taken my family and my brother and they also have been very satisfied with the food/service. Highly recommended AAA+++ !!!
