    Waited over an hour for service, not that busy, others came in and we served without a problem after us. We were nicely dressed, polite, and patiently waited for service, until finally walking out. We realized afterwards that there was probably discrimination here. There was no other explanation for the very obvious snub and sarcastic "sorry ladieeeees" as we finally realized and walked out. My sister has a rainbow tattoo on her shoulder. Disgusting!

    Charming place, something different

    Had lunch here during the Tall Ships visit. A very unique facility, with a smoke house onsite as well as a large outdoor patio dining area. The menu is also unique; a little pricey, but everything is home made, so a lot of care and effort is involved in the preparation. The servers seemed a little frantic (several large groups came in without reservations) but they were friendly and accommodating. The salad was a lovely combination of greens, peach pieces and toasted almonds, and very filling - a good healthy portion to be sure! The dressing was invisible yet very tasty; not overpowering. The smoked meat came on two toasted rye sandwiches, with pickle, sauerkraut and potato salad. I could have sat and listened to the background music all afternoon; jazz from the 1940s. Marvelous! Not somewhere I would eat every week, but for something different, I would recommend it for sure.

    Spectacular hits ...and some misses

    I really hate to give Mad Michael's such a low score on food, but I pray thee! Let me explain. The food is all fresh. The food is all lovingly homemade. Unfortunately, it's strangely, bafflingly uneven. For every success --a perfectly cooked, huge piece of just-caught rainbow trout-- there's a major mistake. The special elk ribs were paired with a delicious raspberry-chipotle sauce, but as my grandmother quietly explained to me, the chefs forgot to remove a tough membrane, resulting in some very tough meat. The lemonade is fantastic, yet the Louisiana-styled iced tea tastes like water with a slight bitter edge. The brisket was enjoyed by three of my fellow diners, but my father's chicken (sampled by others) was declared dry and bland. The cornbread is the best I've ever had, the salads are colourful, bright and perfectly dressed, and the corn on the cob smothered in a heavenly herb butter. Then the soup, a mushroom stock apparently topped with brandy, was severely lacking flavour other than vaguely earthy truffle note. The coconut cream pie was declared a triumph, but the banana cream? Bizarrely, my mouth was assaulted with the acid of lemon: my mother's hypothesis is probably correct, with the suggestion that the chef tossed his cut bananas in lemon juice to prevent browning. Evidently, he used *way* too much, something that we also found in the lemon meringue pie. A shame. Very strange indeed. Some of the best dishes we've encountered in our adventures, next to some of the most unremarkable or downright poor. But I wouldn't give up on this place, as it is simply beautiful, and with great staff. Maybe we hit an off day, with an unfortunate number of mistakes coincidentally happening at once? The amount of care that is evident in our surroundings, and in the dishes that succeeded with blazing glory, suggests so.

    Great BBQ and more at Mad Michael's

    Located in Wyebridge on Hwy 93 near Midland, Penetanguishene, Wasaga Beach cottage country, Mad Michael's is one of the best local places for a great casual meal. If you like southern-style BBQ, this is the place!! We tried the texas pork ribs - to die for, well smoked, just enough spicy kick and so tender... We also tried the sliced brisket - not as good as the ribs in my opinion, but very good, and the sauce was exceptional... and we tried the sirloin with shrimp -- not traditional BBQ, but a good dish anyway. Michael came by to see how our meal was, and was charming -- a genuine foodie and BBQ enthusiast! Tasty sides included fabulous fresh salads, THE BEST cornbread EVER, baked yam, fried green tomatoes and more. All SO good. Desserts (yes, we somehow managed to eat dessert after the huge portions!) were made in-house at the bakery and were delicious and creative. All told we spent $106 plus tip and had a great time. Good service, lovely atmosphere on the small patio by the river, and the best food we've found in the area to date. Highly recommended!!!
