Meet the owner

“A lot of people that come for the first time are awestruck, like they’ve been transported to a different place in time,” explains Claudia Fancello, manager of The Cardinal Tea Room. That’s no exaggeration. With deep rich wood panels and railings, embroidered wallpaper, old clocks and wall-mounted bookcases, one feels like they’re in an old English establishment that has been serving high tea since their grandparents were young and chipper.

But the Cardinal has only been operating since December 2013, with Claudia coming on board March 2014. “The idea of the tea room is something owner Murad Meshgini has dreamt of opening. It’s always been a heart project. I think you kind of feel that in the space.” Pastry chef Kathy Daehler embodies that heart with her incredible standards in preparing everything from blueberry scones served with cream and jam to shortbread cookies to cheddar bacon thyme muffins, sausage rolls and other sweets and savories, all baked in-house.

Prepare to be transported into another universe – somewhere in nineteenth century England – as you climb the stairs leading to the Cardinal Tea Room. This is an excellent place to meet and chat with friends, or share secrets while feasting of the best oven-fresh blueberry scones in town and egg and watercress toast (to die for!). Happiness is smoked tea or cardamom coffee for sipping in the winter, and delicious lemonade on the small terrace in the summer (I've just told you the best kept secret in town!).
