At FCO, we have one simple dream: to give Montrealers an unforgettable tasting experience that not only looks and tastes Italian, but is Italian on every level. The secret to achieving this dream lies in and around the pizzerias of Rome, Italy's capital.
The closest Montrealers can get to authentically Italian pizza and gelato without boarding a plane is by heading to Viger Street West’s FCO di Fiumicino; where the oven, the gelato machine and even the owner are all Italian. “All of our pizzas are prepared here, using nothing but the freshest ingredients, according to traditional recipes,” explains owner Dino Palmieri.
There are no 99-cent slices or extravagant toppings to be found at FCO di Fiumicino, but rather deliciously simple pizza. “We prepare it al metro, which means that it’s rectangular in shape and about one metre long, just like in Rome. Many people think of pizza as fast food; we don’t subscribe to that North American conception and its variants, which are usually slathered in greasy toppings. What we’re offering is a real return to basics,” says Dino. “I wanted to show that pizza can be a refined, sophisticated dish, and I think we’ve succeeded.”
In addition to its metre-long pizzas, FCO di Fiumicino creates delicious and inventive gelatos. “While our dark chocolate gelato is very popular," notes Dino, "other flavours, like our own cinnamon-ricotta, attract a lot of attention.”
Sure, it is a pizzeria ... but also a gelateria. It's all possible temptations in one place. This should be illegal. But it's not, so enjoy it! As for gelato, you'll find it at this West Viger Street establishment. Ricotta cheese and cinnamon? Ferrero Rocher chocolate? Pistachio? Let yourself go. You can even buy it by the liter, to be sure not to miss out.
Sure, you can have a great pizza here (and you should!), but FCO is not just a good pizzeria. It’s also a gelateria, making its very own homemade gelato in five drool-worthy flavours. So after a couple of standout slices, go to the counter to try one or more of the dark chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio, ricotta and cinnamon, or lemon sorbet.
