Meet the owner

If you have yet to visit Dinette Triple Crown on rue Clark in Little Italy, you’ve been missing out on the best fried chicken in the city, not to mention one of the top ways to spend a sunny summer afternoon. DTC’s famous picnic baskets add class and comfort to outdoor eating and, with Parc de la Petite Italie right across the street, it couldn’t be more convenient to dine outside.

Nicole Turcotte, with head chef and business partner Colin Perry, worked in various restaurants for five years and always had in mind the idea of starting a place with a take-out counter and a formal dining room. When the Triple Crown location became available with exactly that, the two knew they had to scrape money together and plunge into running their own business.

Following a step-by-step plan for refurbishment ― first counter, then kitchen ― they opened the dinette ‘corner store’ location in June 2012, with only eight seats available. They planned to stick to the refurbishment schedule and open the dining area next, but in the meantime a friend suggested doing picnic baskets for the park. They did not expect the idea to take off so suddenly.

“Originally we imagined that it would just be for groups, since our seating area was too small for them,” explains Nicole. “But everyone wanted the baskets. We had wanted to offer the same experience as the restaurant in the open air. It didn’t appeal to have people eating our food with plastic forks and Styrofoam cups, so we prepared baskets that people could bring back.”
