A "Real" Taste of Syria

The interior is well thought-out; they managed to make it very oriental without it being tacky or too “ethnic”. We did enjoy the suspended brass lights and “diwans” along the walls. Damas offers traditional Syrian dishes while introducing new elements. For starters, you will find hot & cold mezzés, a couple of salads and soups. Then you will find the token “grillades” that pretty much every Arabic restaurant in town offers, and finally the authentic dishes that Syrians would call “home” food. The service at our table was just good; the waiting times were acceptable and our waiter checked on us repeatedly. However, near the end of the night, we thought there was some lack of professionalism at the bar area (right next to where we were seated), when the staff had a lady friend over and they were all chit-chatting, surfing the web on a laptop and watching a game on TV. All-in-all, we enjoyed the food at Damas tonight, and it brings us pride as Syrians after seeing the rave reviews it got in the media and on blogs. Hopefully Montrealers will now know how Syrian cuisine really differs from its more common Lebanese counterpart. The restaurant still needs to work a bit on its service, but we will definitely be back.

Eat your greens! Montreal’s best salads

Damas restaurant, located in Outremont, is a favourite amongst Montrealers, and with good reason! All their meat is cooked over an open flame, adding an extra layer of flavour, the décor is beautiful and the food is delicious! Most Middle Eastern restaurants serve fattouche salad, a common Middle Eastern salad, but the one at Damas is pretty spectacular. This refreshing salad is made up of greens, fresh herbs, tomato, cucumber, pepper, radish, fried pita, spices and the best part, pomegranate seeds.

Treat mom to a great dinner in Montreal

This Syrian restaurant has built up quite a reputation for itself. With vegetarian options for the pickier mother, and plenty of delicious meat for the carnivorous mother, it’s the perfect restaurant for sharing a lot of plates with the family. Opt for the tasting menu so that you can try a bit of everything, their various Middle Eastern dips with fresh pita will have you salivating at every bite.

I recommend rationing, as you’ll want to order everything on the menu. If grabbing a table for two, I suggest that you start with four mezze (small dishes) to share. I recommend the Kibbé nayyé, which is a beef tartare with bulgur and seven spices; the Baba Ghannouj salad; the Fattouch salad; and the Sharhat, a filet mignon deglazed with lemon. They also offer several other combinations and even a 5-course tasting menu. Damas puts sunshine and happiness on your plate!
