When in Quebec City, we were anxious to have some traditional favourites such as tourtière, salt-pork, baked beans and the like. The Restaurant aux anciens canadiens is famous for these dishes, but we elected to go to the Buffet as a lower-priced alternative.
The restaurant isn't very large but offers several tables on the sidewalk for open-air dining. Grab one of these tables if you can because there is no air conditioning inside the restaurant and it was quite warm (uncomfortable) inside the restaurant. The decor is a bit dated, but it had a charming diner-like feel to it. The service was competent but not overly attentive. We ordered in French but the menus and serving staff are bilingual.
What we ordered is listed below. Two of us ordered the assiette québecoise which consisted of a pork pie, beans and accompaniments. One of us ordered the cipaille (a meat pie of braised pork, beef and veal with potatoes). The other member of our party ordered a haddock fillet. Most dishes are available as a table d'hôte with soup and dessert included.
Don't delude yourself into thinking that the pork pie is anything like tourtière. It was bland and relatively dry. The beans tasted like they came straight from a can. The cipaille, although tastier than the pork pie, was also somewhat dry. The fish got good reviews.
Accompaniments consisted of a a small salad portion that resembled burger toppings (shredded iceburg lettuce and a couple of slices of tomato), choice of potato and an overcooked vegetable medley.
This is not the restaurant for a fix of traditional Quebec dishes. Invest in a trip to the R-A-A-C for that. One of the patrons behind us raved about her poutine though. It looked really gooey and so in the off chance I ever return, I will probably order that.
This affordable restaurant in the Old Port serves meals like grandma used to make – hearty and delicious – and their breakfasts are no exception. Big plates of eggs, sausages, home fries and homemade baked beans; pancakes dripping with real maple syrup; and the delicious omelettes are all very popular. On a nice day, you can sit in the courtyard and enjoy your meal in the sun. The best part is that breakfast is served all day.
Tucked away from the main streets, this gem can be easily overlooked. It would be a shame to miss out on this diner-style restaurant serving up generous portions of authentic French Canadian foods at very reasonable prices. If locals frequent a restaurant, it's a solid indicator of great food, and this diner does not disappoint. The tourtiere and poutine are both highly recommended choices.
This restaurant has been an institution of the Old Port for over 30 years. You can have breakfast as early as 6 am, with over 20 breakfast selections to choose from. Eggs are a star in many of the dishes featured.
