Meet the owner

As soon as you walk into Blackstrap BBQ you are overcome by the smoky aroma of barbecue chicken, pork and briskets. The restaurant smells like a delicious rack of ribs and looks like a southern barbecue house with its wooden signage and picnic tables. That is exactly what the owners, husband and wife team Dylan Kier and Clara Barron, are aiming for.

“We offer a style of barbecue that isn't that available up here,” says Clara. “Traditional Quebec barbecue is usually really saucy. They boil their ribs, sauce them and grill them. We don't use any sauce. We rub them dry and smoke them in the smoker.”

There are a couple other places in Montreal that offer a southern barbecue house experience, but they have only caught onto what Clara and Dylan started at Blackstrap BBQ. The front window is lined with over a dozen trophies from barbecue competitions where Dylan competed and won. In Quebec, he is the undisputed champion of the barbecue and he has even been invited to some prestigious barbecue competitions down in the U.S. such as the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbeque in Tennessee.

Unique comme expé...

Unique comme expérience. En plus, la rue Wellington et le quartier sont tout à fait en harmonie avec ce restaurant! Seul bémol, il n'y a pas beaucoup de places assises.

Sorry, We're Out

Blackstrap is set up exactly the way a southern BBQ joint should be: small, casual with a large smoker that takes center stage in the open kitchen. The menu revolves around five barbecued meats: pork, brisket, turkey, ribs and chicken. You can get these in either sandwich or plate form, with quite a few sides to choose from. When we showed up around 7:30PM, they had already run out of brisket and ribs, which didn't leave us much choice. We went with the Pork Sandwich (a hit) and the Turkey Sandwich (so-so). The lady at the cash machine was friendly and we didn't have to wait too long before getting our food. To be perfectly honest, our first visit to Blackstrap BBQ was rather disappointing. We were expecting more food-wise, based on the overwhelmingly positive blog reviews it received. Ultimately, however, we are having trouble getting past the whole "sold out" situation.
