Meet the owner

When she picked up the flute at age 10, Catherine Issalys knew that music was her calling. She graduated from the University of Montreal with a master’s degree in music and launched her career as a professional musician, but while she loved performing, she wanted a more regular routine. Little did she know she'd find it in coffee.

As a resident of Ville-Émard, Catherine felt the area was missing a nice comfortable place to get a good cup of joe, so she took it upon herself to open one. She found a convenient location in a neighbouring area on Wellington Street in Verdun and opened Le Baobab Café, along with help from her boyfriend, Jocelyn, and her sister, Marianne. Jocelyn's work in management kept him occupied during the day, so Catherine ran the café on her own each evening until he’d arrive to lend a hand.

Despite its small size and simple menu — coffee, teas and pastries — people began lining up for Baobab's quality java and soon, Catherine had to hire some help. “People were coming in and asking for food,” she says. “So the menu expanded to offer soups, salads and sandwiches.” The lineups grew and as luck had it, the space next door became available. Baobab grew to more than twice its size with 45 seats, a children's area and even an outdoor terrace.

When she first began contemplating the project, she had no idea her café would become so popular in the area. Each day here, the flow of traffic is constant as people stop by for a drink to go, take a seat to enjoy a meal, get some work done, or savour a coffee while their kids colour or draw.
