Meet the owner

“The Sage of Shellfish & Ocean Languages, Specializing in Oyster Tongues.” That’s how Rodney Clark, owner of Rodney’s Oyster House, signs his emails. In case you haven’t guessed, this man is passionate about oysters, something he attributes, in part, to his upbringing in the Maritimes.

Rodney was born in Prince Edward Island, where his father ran a building-supply company. After attending art college in the United States, Rodney moved to Toronto to work as a commercial artist. While there, some Torontonians who were suppliers for Rodney's father's business would ask the Clarks to send them boxes of Maritime oysters. "That's how I got my name ‘The Oyster Man.’ It just grew and grew. I was interested in getting a good oyster into a good home, and they'd keep asking for more," Rodney recalls. And so, the first Rodney’s Oyster House was born in Toronto in 1986. Another restaurant followed in Vancouver in 1998 and then in Calgary in 2015.

"At Rodney’s, we’re notorious for good oysters,” says Rodney, adding that his restaurants are “all about bringing people together to have fun.”

Rodney's provides a casual dining atmosphere that reflects fishing and ocean culture. In Rodney's Calgary location, for example, weathered wood, fish nets and floats hang from the high ceiling, and a decorative rock "island" anchoring the central bar imparts a real seacoast flavour to the space. Rodney's has an extensive seafood menu – with a focus on shellfish – and is open for both lunch and dinner. Oysters are king here, but entrees range from good old fish and chips to lobster, Dungeness crab, pasta with clams and an array of cold and smoked seafood plates.

The food was great but the worst customer service I have ever had. The servers were rude and disrespectful.

Would definitely recommend and come back. The Sex on the Bay oysters from New Brunswick were amazing! Everything on the menu won't disappoint.

We always loving going to Rodney's whether it's a family event like Mother's Day or a date night with just my wife and I. Why? The service is always friendly and helpful. The food is always delicious and consistent every time. The location and atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice and appealing. For Mother's day we ordered the lobster eggs benedict, salmon eggs benedict and stuffed french toast for the toddler. It was all very good and very well done. My favourite part has to either be the beer and fresh PEI oysters or the buttery string has browns. Amazing! Can't wait to go back again for a lobster dinner!!!

Our server was very friendly. Food was great! They can and will try to help tailor your evening. They had a larger party in who asked for a range of their menu foods and they had brought it out on a large plank, ( 2 people had to carry it). You can request half portions. We had a great time! They have a specials menu with more items on it than what shows on the website menu- which we ordered from. Definitely would go back.

First off! Jay was awesome and such a good server. While he was obviously pretty busy upstairs, he took his time to go through the menu with us which was great. Atmosphere lacks a star because the music was too loud (especially where we were seated!) for us to just have a nice conversation. The food - took so so long to come to us. The Tuna Tartare was amazing. Perfect garlicky guacamole under the chunks of tuna. And the crackers were amazing! What are they even?! Very tasty dish and would recommend to friends! Hot smoked salmon, was good, but for the price I’d like more salmon and less pickled veggies/hot peppers. Would probably go for the cold smoked next time! Mussels and Frites - white wine option. Mussels were plenty and the frites were really well seasoned and crispy. The broth was really wine-y and could’ve been either cooked off more - I ended up only eating 5/6 from the bowl because it wasn’t great. Overall, the restaurant is nicely spaced out and the staff are all so so friendly. Jay, and every server that came to our table, was so good to us and made sure we were looked after. Although it took almost 3 hours (!!!!) from seating to bill-paying, we would definitely come back and try a different selection to get a better idea of this spot

We absolutely love Rodney’s, and as usual the meal was amazing. Unfortunately there was a private event that took over the lower part of the restaurant and they still seated regular patrons above. This wouldn’t have been an issue except the sound system blasted the music and the speeches everywhere so much so that we couldn’t even talk to the person next to us. We couldn’t hear the waitress explain the specials and when the food arrived we had to look to see what was on the plate to try and figure out who’s was what because even yelling we couldn’t hear. Will definitely make sure we check and see that this isn’t the case the next time we wish to dine here!

We went for my wife's 50th B-Day on a Tuesday night. We had the same waiter that we had last time we visited which was mid summer 2018. He was extremely helpful, friendly and had a great sense of humor. All the staff we interacted with were extremely helpful and friendly. The food was again outstanding and we all came away stuffed !! We will be back again in the future. Grahame

Service wasn't very attentive to or needs more of a drop the food off and then leave. The placew wasn't that busy and they could have put more effort into the services. Prices are steep for the servings although its seafood and this is Calgary a long ways from the source. Would have to try more of the menu before commenting on the overall food.

Service due to a server that had no idea as to which table ordered what. I think that you could also add another $ sign onto the rating as we all felt a little pricey though enjoyable.

Beer and oysters are a match made in heaven and Rodney’s offers a good variety of both alongside its signature East Coast hospitality. The taps and bottle selections are dominated by crisp craft beers, with plenty of local choices and a feature tap for those who want to try something new.

Make mine mussels: A Calgary seafood standard

Make mine mussels: A Calgary seafood standard

Unlike some other seafood joints in town, rather than being inspired by European flavours, Rodney’s is a wholly Canadian East Coast affair, with owner Rodney Clark (yes, there is an actual Rodney) having learned his trade in his home province of P.E.I. While oysters rule here, Rodney also does a mean mussel. Get fresh steamed mussels when they’re in season or cold marinated mussels any time of the year.
