Meet the owner

“The Sage of Shellfish & Ocean Languages, Specializing in Oyster Tongues.” That’s how Rodney Clark, owner of Rodney’s Oyster House, signs his emails. In case you haven’t guessed, this man is passionate about oysters, something he attributes, in part, to his upbringing in the Maritimes.

Rodney was born in Prince Edward Island, where his father ran a building-supply company. After attending art college in the United States, Rodney moved to Toronto to work as a commercial artist. While there, some Torontonians who were suppliers for Rodney's father's business would ask the Clarks to send them boxes of Maritime oysters. "That's how I got my name ‘The Oyster Man.’ It just grew and grew. I was interested in getting a good oyster into a good home, and they'd keep asking for more," Rodney recalls. And so, the first Rodney’s Oyster House was born in Toronto in 1986. Another restaurant followed in Vancouver in 1998 and then in Calgary in 2015.

"At Rodney’s, we’re notorious for good oysters,” says Rodney, adding that his restaurants are “all about bringing people together to have fun.”

Rodney's provides a casual dining atmosphere that reflects fishing and ocean culture. In Rodney's Calgary location, for example, weathered wood, fish nets and floats hang from the high ceiling, and a decorative rock "island" anchoring the central bar imparts a real seacoast flavour to the space. Rodney's has an extensive seafood menu – with a focus on shellfish – and is open for both lunch and dinner. Oysters are king here, but entrees range from good old fish and chips to lobster, Dungeness crab, pasta with clams and an array of cold and smoked seafood plates.

The food was great but the worst customer service I have ever had. The servers were rude and disrespectful.

We had an excellent meal and the servers, kitchen, bartenders and mangers all work together to make sure you have a great time. Very personable and fun to chat with. The food is incredible and they have killer Caesars. So many choices for oysters and served with a large variety of house made sauces. The chef took us back and we got to see the lobsters too!

Had a mixed platter of freshly shucked oysters which were explained when they brought them out and were all delicious. Then my wife got a dungeness crab and I got a lobster, both were great. My wife talked to one of the chefs in passing and he said the stock used to cook them just gets better and better through the day as the flavours concentrate. My only note would be perhaps a mention that when you order the whole lobster/crab they don't really come with any sides (a shared dish of potato wedges). Nothing major but a side salad would've been a good add on.

Red lobster quality . Terrible service. Gave us our butter 1/2 way through dinner , even after asking for it .The salad was just a vinegaret . Fish restaurant that doesn't give you grease wipes after eating lobster . Asked for water the girl put a jug on the table walked then away. high prices for the quality of food you get . would never tell my clients or people to come here, and if anything how bad everything was.

We came for lunch to celebrate my friend's birthday. Staff was welcoming. The oysters were fresh and sweet. The fish and chips were excellent. We got a complementary chocolate dessert for my friend's birthday. Will come back to try other items on their large menu.

Food was fantastic but our server was not attentive, we had to flag her down multiple times for simple things like ordering the initial drink of the night as also additional drinks. We had to ask/request for the complimentary bread which also took a while and when we asked again she said they were making a fresh batch in the oven but then a minute later another server brought out the bread and it was cold so obviously not fresh out of the oven. We asked for a selection of oysters as she recommended but did request one specific kind. When the variety of 4 different oysters came out (brought out by another server), the one we requested was NOT one of the ones on the tray and when we asked about it she said oh they dont have that one. So our server didnt even inform us that the one specific request we made was actually unavailable, she just sent a replacement without asking.

We felt that we were under serviced. It took a long time for anyone to take our drink order. The timing of the meal coming out was too rapid and didn't allow for us to be asked if we would like additional oysters prior to the soup and main coming out. When the second order of oysters arrived they were explained as different than what we had ordered. When our server came by next time we questioned if we had received what we ordered because of the explanation on delivery being contrary. She picked up our oysters to examine them and confirmed they were as ordered and were just explained incorrectly on their delivery. She should have asked if we minded her touching our oysters with bare unwashed hands or asked if we could pick them up for her to examine them. The white wine broth for the mussels was lacking in flavour. Go here for oysters as that is the best, consistent food to order in our experiences.

From the moment we walked in we were greeted with prompt friendly service. Our server was delightful and knowledgeable and recognize that it was my wife's birthday. Our drinks were brought over and oysters brought out and explained, as we had never eaten an oyster before. Main course was fresh delicious mussels in a white wine sauce with frites, and dessert was the chocolate mousse (with a lit candle and another happy birthday) the cost is competitive with seafood restaurants (better even, if you look at the amazing portion sizes)and the environment was super coastal. Will definitely be back again to try something else from the amazing selection on the menu!

My friends and I frequently meet at Rodney's for their Happy Hour oysters and wine special, then have a light meal. The service is always good, and Rodney's is very accommodating for special dietary requests. The only complaint this last time is that the mussel in wine sauce although tasty, were lukewarm.

Calgary restaurants with beer menus for the brew connoisseur

Beer and oysters are a match made in heaven and Rodney’s offers a good variety of both alongside its signature East Coast hospitality. The taps and bottle selections are dominated by crisp craft beers, with plenty of local choices and a feature tap for those who want to try something new.

Make mine mussels: A Calgary seafood standard

Make mine mussels: A Calgary seafood standard

Unlike some other seafood joints in town, rather than being inspired by European flavours, Rodney’s is a wholly Canadian East Coast affair, with owner Rodney Clark (yes, there is an actual Rodney) having learned his trade in his home province of P.E.I. While oysters rule here, Rodney also does a mean mussel. Get fresh steamed mussels when they’re in season or cold marinated mussels any time of the year.
