Across the High Level Bridge, on the southside of the river, sits a restaurant that many Edmontonians have come to love.
Established in December of 1982, the Highlevel Diner is a culmination of several friends and industry partners coming together to build a restaurant that provides farm fresh food skillfully prepared. With very little money to spare at the beginning but a passion for comfort food, the group of partners built the restaurant’s décor, hauled the kitchen equipment and served the clients in the early days in order to get the restaurant ready for business. “Everybody really wanted to make it happen. There was a lot of heart put into it,” says Debbie Parker, chef and co-owner.
The restaurant was one of the first in the city to offer locally-sourced food, as well as vegetarian options, according to Kim Franklin, co-owner and one of the original partners.
Fast-forward to today and the values of the original owners still remain as Highlevel Diner staff aim to provide quality food to Edmontonians. The diner has since expanded, with many of their dishes now also gluten-free in an effort to respond to their guests' needs and open their doors to more potential clients.
“We have a continued emphasis on locally-sourced food,” says Kim. “Everything is made here, from the ketchup to the mayonnaise.”
