Meet the owner

When it comes to traditional Greek food and fun times, the Anast family's Yiannis Taverna has been Edmonton's go-to place since the late 80s. Current owner and cook, Jim Anast, still uses those same recipes his mother brought over from the home country, decades ago. “That’s one thing about Greek people; they keep using the same recipes,” says Jim’s wife, Tammy. “When somebody gives you a Greek cookbook, it could be 100 years old. It’s like a treasure. It’s also opposite from North American food culture, where the food is really trendy. In Greece, they learned a long time ago how to make the best use of the ingredients.”

Greek restaurants attract a clientele who love to enjoy themselves and their meals, and diners can definitely do both at Yiannis Taverna. “Most of the people who come to Greek restaurants are generally interested in the food because it’s not food you can buy in a grocery store,” says Tammy. “Proper Greek food is very labour intensive and has to be made by hand.”

For a Friday night night, it was dead. Food is better than OPA's. Not as good as some of the other Greek restaurants that have closed in the past 10 years. Wanted to substitute spanikopita for a more expensive part of the combo and waitress gave us the no substitutions line. For a restaurant that is apparently hurting for business, they sure don't serve you like they want to have your business. I predict they're closed in less than 5 years.

Great food, great service. We had two 4-person platters (Olympia?) and couldn't finish it all. It was delicious though.

Haven't been to Yanni's in too many years. Took out of town guests there & hoped it would be as good as I'd remembered. It exceeded my hopes & memory. Loved the 'new' look & everything was perfect! I ordered the 'Vegetarian Mousaka'....it was absolutely delicious! Our server was lovely, fun & personable. Hang onto that girl! Thank you....will be back very soon.

Lovely meal in a beautiful, romantic atmosphere with excellent service that was not bothersome. Athena Platter is highly recommended, especially the Saganaki (flambeed cheese). Would love to come back on a sunny evening when the windows to Whyte Avenue are open, and stay for the baklava and a latte. Thanks!

The food was horrible. It was dry, tasteless and lacked flavour. 30 dollars for such dishes suggest the food is really overpriced and the place is hyped. I have lived in Edmonton for 10 years and always wanted to tried Yannis because of the impression I had of the place as a reputed one. Now I am left wondering what kind of crazy people like Yannis' food. The rice is HORRIBLE! The salad is so plain and bland (and too much feta, too salty) that I think I make better Greek salad at home. I would NEVER go back there, and ACTIVELY discourage people from going there. I eat out every weekend in Edmonton and this was really a very bad experience I (and my family) have had.

We had such a fun birthday celebration at Yiannis! The slow cooked lamb is our new favorite! Although it's hard to decide whether we like the Ek Mek or the cheesecake more, for dessert. So we had both! Thanks you Tammy and Jim for the wonderful food and service

Enjoyed a great night on the patio taking in Whyte Avenue and the local culture. We were not rushed, instead encouraged to enjoy our food and drink at our pace. This is the reason I have been coming back to this restaurant for years.

We were a group of 7 ladies out for dinner before a play. The restaurant wasn't overly busy which was great. We could chat easily. The food was wonderful! The service was a tad slow but since we had plenty of time it wasn't an issue. All in all it was a great evening.

This romantic restaurant on Whyte Avenue has plenty of cozy tables for date night and the basement, home to a martini bar called Kasbar, is an awesome place to host a birthday party or a large group. The food is delectable (especially the horiatiki salad) and reasonably priced. It’s also a good place to spot local celebs – I was once seated at the table next to my childhood hero. He seemed to be enjoying his meal too.
