Searching for the perfect setting for your next big date-night or celebratory dinner? Look no further than what can be described as one of the most romantic rooms in the city — Carthage Café on Commercial Drive. Vancouver’s only Tunisian restaurant, Carthage serves classic French and Tunisian fare using fresh ingredients and exotic spices.

Opened in 2006 by brothers Zico and Mohammed Draoui, the room itself has an intimate, authentic charm unlike anywhere else in Vancouver. With its bay windows, glossy 85-year-old mahogany floors and walls, candle-lit tables and fine-dining service, Carthage has mastered the Parisian bistro vibe. Not surprisingly, Carthage draws a strong French crowd. “When I opened here I discovered there was a big French community in Vancouver,” says Zico.

I have been here many times and I love your restaurant but our service was terrible. I can't remember such poor, unorganized, disinterested service from anywhere. Our waitress was a young girl who was not just incompetent, but she didn't even seem to care that she was doing a poor job. If it wasn't for an excellent older female server, I think we'd still be sitting there waiting to pay.

A favorite place to eat with consistently good food and friendly atmosphere. Service very good and the service staff was quick to read our mood hanging back and not bugging us to order right away allowing us to visit. Great place , we'll be back.

Mussels with Cream and Blue cheese are too die for - so good that you need to lick the shells! Best mussels that we have had this side of Moncton, NB. Dessert of the day - a custard tart with lots of fresh ripe strawberrys on top was delicious and worth coming for it alone. Service was outstanding - friendly, helpful and attentive Highly recommend this restaurant

The restaurant staff were excellent - welcoming, attentive and fun to be around. They got the balance right between friendliness and not intrusive. We felt well taken care of and appreciated as patrons. The food was generally very nice although a bit salty perhaps in a couple of dishes. It was an eclectic menu, very French influenced, and perhaps I expected more North African cuisine given Lebanese influence. Overall, we had an enjoyable time. We had five dinners, three with starters, and wine for $270 including service.

Food was generally very good, but not quite up to the standard I've come to expect from this little gem of a restaurant. We chose Carthage Cafe because besides its overall excellence, we wanted a place that was quiet enough to actually have a conversation -- a rarity in ever-noisier Vancouver. It did not disappoint! My only complaint (and it is a small one) is that my steak frites was a bit tougher than I expected. Otherwise, we all enjoyed our meals, and the ability to actually talk to each other without having to raise our voices.

Cozy with lots of cool lanterns. Very friendly server, they were busy, yet we always felt looked after. I had the lamb shank with couscous and I would definitely go back for it again. Very flavourful, big portion size, and the meat was soooo tender.

We were a group of 3 couples and had the dine out Vancouver menu. We enjoyed everything but I will particularly mention the soup, the California salad, the lamb shank and the chicken which were favourites of those that ordered them. The servings were large and well cooked and seasoned. The spices used are subtle but effective and a bit out of the ordinary. Coffee was strong, a bit sweet, and lightly flavoured with orange syrup. Very nice. The service was prompt and attentive. All of us said that we would definitely eat at Carthage again.

The restaurant is very cute and cozy. The food was very good; we liked the appetizers and the lamb shank couscous. The chicken tagine was a bit bland, however. The crème brûlée was the best I've ever had. I will definitely come back and try the mussels.
