Meet the owner

Searching for the perfect setting for your next big date-night or celebratory dinner? Look no further than what can be described as one of the most romantic rooms in the city — Carthage Café on Commercial Drive. Vancouver’s only Tunisian restaurant, Carthage serves classic French and Tunisian fare using fresh ingredients and exotic spices.

Opened in 2006 by brothers Zico and Mohammed Draoui, the room itself has an intimate, authentic charm unlike anywhere else in Vancouver. With its bay windows, glossy 85-year-old mahogany floors and walls, candle-lit tables and fine-dining service, Carthage has mastered the Parisian bistro vibe. Not surprisingly, Carthage draws a strong French crowd. “When I opened here I discovered there was a big French community in Vancouver,” says Zico.

Booked a reservation for Valentine's Day. Called in to ask if there was a set menu, because last year we were screwed over by a last minute set menu. I was told there was not a set menu. When we arrived not only were we told there was a set menu, but it was last year's menu with jiffy marker on it Changi g the price. Not sure if this is due to the ownership change last year, but what used to be one of my favourite restaurants is now I place my wife and I will probably never return to. Which is a shame.

My wife and I were celebrating our 53rd Valentines together. Yes 53rd and we are just 70. Got to the Carthage and loved the atmosphere and the setting. Were stunned by the Special Valentine's Menu. Not what we wanted. So I suggested we do just one Meal and the server said "why not, sure". Had a great meal and stayed for over 2 hours. Looking forward to coming back soon and exploring the regular menu, with escargot, coquille st jacques and some amazing seafood. Food was good. Not Exceptional but still good/. Pinnacle Lobby Restaurants Lamb is superb as is their entire menu. None The Less we will return. Loved the hold style French Bistro Atmosphere. R&B Scobie

I've been here in the past and it was amazing, but I came here for Valentine's day this year and the set menu was $80 and both the starter and main we got were disappointing. My lamb was greasy (the whole plate, veggies included were greasy) and there was hardly any meat on my plate. The cantaloupe and pancetta salad had exactly one slice of pancetta on it and wasn't anything special. Very sad, this place was so good in the past!

We had made reservations for Valentine's Day after checking the menu on their web site. There was no mention of any special, fixed V-Day menu. But when we arrived we were told that there was a fixed menu anyway at $80 per person. Normally you can eat there for less than half. The owner claimed that the fixed V-Day menu was posted on their website but that was of course a demonstrable lie and she quickly had to admit that it wasn't there but did not apologize for it. It was pretty clear to us that the owner had purposely "forgotten" to post the expensive fixed menu to lure in customers. I don't recommend this place. The owner is a dishonest lier.

We quite enjoyed the experience as a whole, but one of our mains came out cold, we sent it back and they put the same dish in the Oven and brought it back piping hot but thoroughly dried out. Not the type of experience I would expect when spending $200 on a meal.

You should inform people on your website that you are only offering Dine-out menue with 3 stupid main courses and by 7 pm one of was sold out. On a Saturday evening with a full restaurant, you had only one server on. He did his best, but it was a joke. Most people that we saw there were not happy and said the same thing "it didn't say anything about your menu on the website ". Bad Business practice

We just went for Dine Out Vancouver. First off, there was only one server for the whole restaurant. The poor guy was also either extremely inexperienced at his job or just not good at it. Regardless, the service was terrible. Hey Carthage, here's some advice, do not subscribe to Dine Out and not have adequate and qualified staff on hand. Also Carthage, there's only 3 food choices on the menu. Don't underestimate and run out before the first seating. One more thing Carthage, make sure your wine stock is full before the first seating. There's a wine store 2 blocks from you for crying out loud. And lastly Carthage, if you want to attract new and returning customers as part of Dine Out, make sure all your dishes taste good. Yes, including dessert. Don't serve some undercooked, terrible tasting pasty puck and call it Creme Caramel. We can tell. Sorry Carthage, that was money wasted.

The space was cozy, which I imagine would be more enjoyable not during dine out. Service was inconsistent and slow. I didn’t get my ice tea until half way through the second course. Fortunately I speak French, but had I not been there my family would have received even slower service. Food was good. I tried my husbands lamb and it blew my chicken out of the water. Soup was good and sorbet was a simple sorbet.

This was a marked deterioration of food quality from our last visits. We have come here many times over the years. Our 17-year old chose this place for his birthday supper this year for the mussels and it was disappointing. Mussels were gritty, the vegan couscous was over salty (making up for the lack of other spices?) and the onion soup was tasty but only 1/2 a bowl, the bread arrived way before the mussels so we filled up on bread before the meal. Our food was late and the server was gracious but I expected more. We will go again in hopes that it returns to it’s previous fine standards. But not for a few months.

What a disappointing experience ! They were one of our favorite restaurants and we invited our family this time. We decided not to go back again. Everything changed from the food to the service. We were told at the end of the dinner that the owner changed. It was so freezing at the restaurant but a server didn’t even know how to turn up the heater. He didn’t know how to place cutleries properly. We were served small cold burned bread. Our favorite dishes and desserts didn’t taste the same. Sad.

We had not eaten at Carthage Cafe in a few years and found it was not as expected. The service was adequate but the food was not up to the quality we've had on previous visits. The restaurant is known for its mussels and they were not the freshest. Many items on the menu were not available such as the merguez sausage (another signature food) and halibut. They were even out of the wine we tried to order. Sadly it was a disappointing evening.

My second visit to the Carthage. I love the old-world atmosphere and the excellent, traditionally prepared food. I also appreciate the professional, but very natural, non-corporate service of the wait staff. My only small complaint would be that things seemed slightly disorganized last night. However, that did not detract from our overall enjoyment of the meal.

Carthage has been a favourite place of mine for fresh mussels for the last couple of years. On my most recent visit, I brought my family from out of town for their first meal in Vancouver. It was unfortunate that the experience was disappointing this time around, as we waited almost an hour for our mussels to arrive. We went for a fairly late dinner (7pm), and by almost 8 pm, we were starving as we chew down the only items on our table, a few thin pieces of bread. The waitress came to apologize a couple of times for the delay, which was nice of her, but it still doesn't explain the almost 1 hr wait time for a mostly empty restaurant with max 3 tables seated. Overall, the food was still great, was just disappointed with the long wait time which made my family very unhappy.

Come here to experience the rare dining pleasure of having your waiter respond to every nod of your head. It’s uncommon to find this kind of attentive – almost telepathic – service at an everyday restaurant. Enjoy the gorgeous decor and a glass of wine while you ponder the intriguing Tunisian and French menu.
