Meet the owner

Growing up in the Lower Mainland, chef Angus An spent countless hours in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother. “My love for cooking dates back a long time ago,” says the celebrated chef. “In grade one, I graduated from cooking fried eggs to fried rice… I’d stand on a stool and watch my grandmother cook.”

However, cooking wasn’t his initial career path. Angus went on to study architecture at the University of British Columbia. “I was going for my Master’s in Architecture because I wanted to do something creative,” Angus recalls. “When I decided to become a chef, that conceptualization and the execution of ideas I learned at UBC really helped me in my cooking style and plating presentation.”

Angus honed his culinary skills while training under chef David Thompson at the world’s first Michelin-starred Thai restaurant, Nahm in London, England. “David was my mentor, one who really inspired me to learn all about Thai food,” he notes.

In 2009, Angus opened Maenam in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood. Situated on West 4th Avenue, the award-winning fusion restaurant is located in the space that was once housed Gastropod - Angus' first foray as a restaurateur. He has since opened three more casual dining restaurants: Fat Mao Noodles in Vancouver's Chinatown neighbourhood, Freebird Chicken Shack and Longtail Kitchen in New Westminster.

Overrated. The food is not like traditional Thai at all, it's westernized and boring with not many options and nothing remotely spicy. The portions were good as they should be for quite a high price but the wait staff and ambience was nice. If you're looking for authentic Thai this really isn't it.

Overall food and service are great, Our table this time is right next to the bar so the bar noise is unusually loud over us, difficult to hear our own conversations. We left earlier for that reason.

We always enjoy the tasting menu with the wine parings. My only concern is in regards to the tipping options when paying with a credit card. Your tip options start at 18% and go higher from there. I am sorry, but as an ex-waiter and as a frequent diner, I am quite familiar with our tipping culture and to now suggest that 18% is the minimum one should consider... (I realize that there are an opt-out option and another option that can have you choose your own tip amount, but these two paths are more complicated and create an awkward moment between the customer and waiter.) May I suggest a 10, 15, 20% tipping preset or 12,15, 20%.

Maenam is hands down the premiere Thai restaurant in Vancouver. I first visited Maenam about 7 years ago and they really know how to introduce you to the world of exotic Thai cuisine. The set 5 course menu with wine pairing is the way to go. Combined with their top notch customer service and intimate setting, you will savour every moment of your experience at Maenam.

I've been twice recently, for lunch with friends and most recently dinner with family. On both occasions the service was outstanding. Truly excellent staff, who bring food out promptly, check in quietly, and are attentive to everyone. At the lunch, the cake cutting service was much appreciated, and splitting of the bill worked flawlessly. Thank you!

Enjoyed a few appies and a shared main dish. Beautiful flavourful, just the right portions. Nice wine pairings. Will come back to try other menus items. Desserts were the only things I wish there were additional choices. Was not a fan of the options available.
