Meet the owner

Growing up in the Lower Mainland, chef Angus An spent countless hours in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother. “My love for cooking dates back a long time ago,” says the celebrated chef. “In grade one, I graduated from cooking fried eggs to fried rice… I’d stand on a stool and watch my grandmother cook.”

However, cooking wasn’t his initial career path. Angus went on to study architecture at the University of British Columbia. “I was going for my Master’s in Architecture because I wanted to do something creative,” Angus recalls. “When I decided to become a chef, that conceptualization and the execution of ideas I learned at UBC really helped me in my cooking style and plating presentation.”

Angus honed his culinary skills while training under chef David Thompson at the world’s first Michelin-starred Thai restaurant, Nahm in London, England. “David was my mentor, one who really inspired me to learn all about Thai food,” he notes.

In 2009, Angus opened Maenam in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood. Situated on West 4th Avenue, the award-winning fusion restaurant is located in the space that was once housed Gastropod - Angus' first foray as a restaurateur. He has since opened three more casual dining restaurants: Fat Mao Noodles in Vancouver's Chinatown neighbourhood, Freebird Chicken Shack and Longtail Kitchen in New Westminster.

Overrated. The food is not like traditional Thai at all, it's westernized and boring with not many options and nothing remotely spicy. The portions were good as they should be for quite a high price but the wait staff and ambience was nice. If you're looking for authentic Thai this really isn't it.

A wonderful experience of Thai Food. Pad Thai noodle was a bit overcooked, mushy and sticky, unlike the other time we had there. It wasn't a complaint but wanted to give feedback so that the Chef would know for next time. Our server handled this very professionally and took care of this by making another dish for us. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes.

Service is good but the food is way way too salty! The portion size for the roti was very small and it’s ridiculous that the little bit of peanut sauce which in other restaurants is free which is the norm to have with roti but Maenam charges the peanut sauce at $3!!! I won’t be returning and this is the review I’ll give to anyone who asks me.

Music very loud, lots of people and loud talk. Hard to have a conversation without leaning across table and speaking loudly. Needs some accoustical engineering, soft surfaces to absorb EXCESSIVE noise. Food and service outstanding

Outstanding experience. We had the tasting menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. The first few dishes were too spicy and our server was incredibly attentive and let the chef know to dial back on the heat. We've always enjoyed our meals at Maenam! Thank you...

THANK YOU SO MUCH again for another amazing dinner! The food was absolutely delicious. One of my favorite is the Crispy 8-Spice Ling Cod with caramelized palm sugar and tamarind sauce. Every mouthful is a surprise & a delight. And of course the addictive grilled Thai sausage and crispy rice salad too. The combination in the flavor of the grilled sausage compliments the crunchiness in the crispy rice makes me longing for more. The staff was awesome too. They were very attentive throughout the night. We can't wait to be back next Friday!

Service was horrible. We arrived at the front to check in and stood there for 10 mins before anyone even bothered to acknowledge that there were any guests at the front. There were staff standing there socializing but yet no one came over to check us in. The food was mediocre. Our pad Thai came out really salty so I let my server know to send it back. When he brought us another one it was way too sweet. Service and quality has really gone down hill.

I had a great time at Maenam. I had the chef’s tasting menu for dinner and it was perfect. Service was excellent and I received a short description about each meal. The food was esquisite. I found the soup a bit spicy, but no complains. The amount of food was incredibly great. I hope I can come back soon.

Overall a good experience - we all had the tasting menu -1 vegetarian and 4 regular ones but it seemed the vegetarian received way more food than the other 4 combined... is what it is, but they need to look at portioning things individually next visit :)
