For those old enough to remember, American chef and television personality Julia Child is credited with introducing French cuisine to North America. She famously told her audience that anything was better with butter – lots of it.

How things have changed. At West Vancouver’s innovative, French-inspired restaurant, Terroir Kitchen, executive chef and proprietor Faizal Kassam is offering up perfectly executed and simply divine dishes that are also healthy. Sounds like an oxymoron? Non!

Terroir Kitchen is the face of modern French-inspired cuisine. Having said that, Faizal also features Mediterranean gastronomy with nods to Italy, Spain and North Africa.

All the ingredients, save the olive oil, vinegars and some cheeses (the superb burrata is flown in from Southern Italy once or twice weekly), are locally sourced and, as much as possible, sustainable. “I get my fresh Ocean Wise  fish daily and all of the meats are free-range and antibiotic free,” he notes. “I change a few dishes on the menu once a month based on the seasonality of the produce."

Terroir is known for its shared plates, many of which have become fan favourites: the crispy pork belly with smoked cauliflower puree and lentils is sublime; the potato gnocchi with venison ragu, crispy sage, saffron pecorino and cocoa nibs is stunning; and the juicy bone marrow is wonderfully balanced by apple, parsley, capers and pickled pearl onions. “The potato gnocchi is adapted from a 100-year-old recipe given to me by a former chef,” adds Faizal.

For those looking for heartier fare, Terroir Kitchen also offers bigger plates, such as roasted elk, half chicken, grilled skirt steak and catch of the day. Vegetarians, you haven’t been forgotten – the winter squash is chock-full of earthy deliciousness.

This was our third visit to Terrior and it never disappoints. We had the mushroom risotto and the venison pasta and they were both excellent. Paired with a lovely spanish red wine. Extremely enjoyable evening. We will be back for sure!

Not sure why this restaurant isn't busier during the week! This was our third visit and as usual it didn't disappoint! The variety is incredible - daily risotto/pasta dishes, almost every kind of meat you could hope for (venison, pork, chicken, rabbit etc.) and fresh cheeses and homemade breads! And don't forget the fresh seafood! Cocktails are awesome too! The flourless chocolate cake (on the house) for hubby's birthday was the perfect way to end a perfect dinner with friends!

The whole local Ocean Perch for two and truffle risotto are worth coming for alone. House made pastas and bread with seasonal specials plus evolved wine list and cocktails make this our must have local. This place is a real restaurant, you can make it a special occasion or show up in flip flops and rat family style. Love it.

Our absolute favourite restaurant!! The food is amazing, and the service is first rate. Our only complaint is it is getting "discovered" and it is getting harder to get a table. Oh darn, we'll have to plan ahead.

The service and the food was impeccable!! This is one restaurant we go where I am repeatedly impressed with the chef’s ability to cook and flavour every dish to perfection, down to the fingerling potatoes!! The beets with velvety homemade mascarpone cheese is over the top fantastic. I have rarely been impressed by any restaurant (even long standing top rated ones) from start to finish on all fronts like I have been with Terroir. We’ll be back again and again! Great job chef and team!!

The dinner we had at Terroir Kitchen was amazing. The truffles in the risotto special were superb. The baked peach dessert with almond milk was heavenly; possibly the best dessert ever. The staff are supremely competent and enthusiastic about the food. Chef Faizal often comes out to talk with his customers, explaining his food and getting his customer's opinions. This care adds tremendously to the ambiance of Terroir Kitchen.

Outstanding evening. Nice atmosphere with appropriate background music. Very helpful, but not pushy server. Excellent cocktail, Italian burata with heirloom tomatoes, superb grilled octopus and perfect ravioli. Nice wine list with fair prices. Will certainly return!

The food at Terroir is excellent and meant for sharing. Wines were also very good. The wait staff were friendly and very efficient, and give excellent recommendations for food with food, and food with wine pairings. The atmosphere is very modern, with a more "stark" décor and large gaps between tables. A few tables are oddly positioned, meaning that at least one guest faces a wall (not as good) -- that could be modified with a bit of moving tables about as all are movable. We enjoyed our time, particularly the food.

Terroir Kitchen Has the best small plates of any restaurant in the lower mainland. One can happily fill oneself on these, but the main plates are also superb and should not be missed. All the staff are capable, friendly, happy, and enthusiastic, making the entire dining experience at Terroir Kitchen a happy one.
