Bon Appetite at Batifole

Let me tell you about this beautiful French restaurant located in East Chinatown (yes, that's right, there is an East Chinatown in Toronto). Batifole is delicious blend of good food and romantic atmosphere that takes you outside of Chinatown and into a bistro in France. Food: Delicous is the best way to describe the food here. The chefs prepares these dishes very well, as if to say you are his royal guests. I started with the Lobster and fish soup and my partner decided to have the escargot and a side of the fries and tarragon mayonaisse. This was a great way to start off dinner - the soup was creamy and rich in flavour, and the fries were at the right texture and perfect with the tarragon mayo. For dinner, our guest had the beef tenderloin, my partner had the foie gras, and I was feeling adventurous and decided to order the horse tartare. The horse tartare blew me away! If I could place bets on my horse, I would've won the jackpot. It was well seasoned, sweet, and without the game taste to it. Definately worth a try. Service: I think our female server may have been a bit slow at processing our order in her head, but she did ok. The male server was just as good. It was very busy on a Friday night, so we weren't expecting much. As long as my horse on a platter reached our table, that's all that mattered to me. Atmosphere. Definately worth to check out if you want to go somewhere romantic. The table beside us were celebrating their anniversary, a couple of tables were group outings, and a few singles enjoying a nice meal. A good mix of young and old, wealthy and casual. Overall, I would definately say worth a visit. The menu is well suited for those who are adventurous, or those who want to entice their taste buds with something delicious. My suggestion though is to visit during the week rather than a busy weekend night.

I never really had a proper french cuisine before...

I never really had a proper french cuisine before but I know what good food should taste like. I loved the food at Batifole. The atmosphere of the restaurant did make me worry about the quality of the food but they surpassed my expectation. Service is average and that's fine with me, all that matters really is the food...unless the service is terrible. Definitely will visit again.

I went here last night with a good friend of mine. The food was FANTASTIC, everything we had last night was superb and the service was non-intrusive and relaxed. I couldn't ask for a more perfect meal. I would definitly suggest you try this restaurant if you have a chance.

Tres bien at Batifole

My husband and I enjoyed the food at Batifole very much. It was a hot summer evening so the chilled Vichysoisse soup went down very well. I enjoyed the Cassoulet, but found the sausages a bit too garlicky. Otherwise it was very tasty. My husband enjoyed the steak very much. I don't like the fact that the vegetable dishes have to be ordered separately as sides a la carte. One thing is that it was Saturday night and quite busy, so I feel they need more staff because we had to wait quite a while for everything from drinks to mains to getting our bill. Still, the food was delicious. I would recommend going on a weeknight. If you're going on a weekend, you'd better not be in a hurry. Bon appetit.

Batifole is one of my favourite restaurants in the city. The staff is warm and welcoming, the atmosphere is lovely and unpretentious, and the food is honest, delicious, and steeped in French tradition in a way that is incredibly rare. The phrase "hidden gem" is thrown around a lot, but it was made for Batifole.

A lovely dining experience...very friendly service and (in true French fashion) Chef stops by tables to say hello. If you love French food Batifole will not disappoint. The in-house baked bread alone is worth the trip! The side patio is quiet and romantic and perfect for warm summer evenings.

Things at Batifole were great. The food was impressive. The atmosphere was nice. I think a bit more of a full description of the food from the service staff may be helpful. Likewise, when they get busy they very much get busy and it can be hard to catch attention, but that being said it was the best French meal I've ever had in Toronto hands down.

Very disappointed. The food was tasteless. Judging from the crowds it's a place to go and take pictures of the plates but anyone who knows french food knows this food isn't. My green salad was dressed only with salt water. My main the cassoulet, is a simple french classic, the sausage was a breakfast type sausage, the pork belly was only 2 small slices of slightly thick bacon, the duck confit was the only part well cooked. The beans were soft but the dish had zero flavor! My wife's beef tartare had as many capers as beef and was seasoned poorly resulting in a dish completely out of balance. Towards the end, the Chef did come around and asked how things were but given it was my daughter in law's birthday I did not want to make a complaint or a fuss at that time. We decided to pass on any dessert or coffee. It was my daughter in laws birthday and staff confirmed that in the reservation and at the table when they seated us but no candle, no 'happy' while those around us got one. Finally, after quite a long wait I had to beg for the check at the bar from the same waiter who served us and ignored my attempts to get his attention despite his looking right at me when he was roaming around the tables around us. They have a sign in the basement on the way to the restrooms boasting they are 'the best french restaurant in Chinatown'. Telling. Perhaps they should shoot higher?

A thoroughly enjoyable dining experience at Batifole! Service was attentive and very helpful. Food prepared by Chef Geffroy and his Team was excellent. Of particular note were the scallops appetizer, the texture and taste of which were outstanding. I look forward to dining at Batifole again on my all-too-infrequent trips to downtown Toronto.

Chef/Owner Pascal Geffroy’s charming restaurant on Gerrard in Chinatown East offers Mediterranean- and Provencal-focused fare, made with fresh and seasonal ingredients. Batifole is an unassuming little French restaurant in the midst of Chinatown. But don’t let the location deter you; the food is simple yet elegant, and served without the pretentiousness and high prices that some other French bistros charge.
