By The Way is a much-loved neighbourhood favourite that offers contemporary Mediterranean fare with Latin flare in the heart of the Annex. A reliable, tasty standby for generous, nourishing eats, BTW has all the meal bases covered, from breakfast to late-night fill-up. Omelettes, pasta dishes and eggs benny get lots of mention, as does the fine selection of Middle Eastern choices. The restaurant enjoys a particular reputation for its healthy focus. There's also a solid selection of vegetarian dishes. A surprisingly extensive wine list includes both house and vintage options. The space is bright and cheerful. The big corner patio fills up in the summertime. more...

All was well - but the restaurant is noisy - making it difficult to talk with those not right next to you - we were a group of eight.

Deafening noise, tables so close (3"?)that when the person on my right turned to take a picture of their table, he knocked into my arm and wine glass. Very busy night, which greatly affected service. Food well-prepared.

I actually like the atmostphere of the restaurant, but with so many tables so close together, it can be very noisy and very difficult to get in or out from a table, for servers as well as customers. Othewise, I like visiting By the Way a lot. Very pleasant, comfortable, despite the close quarters.

Another wonderful meal at By the Way. The Meze Platter was wonderful as always and the choice of of main was as hard as always....but you can never go wrong with the chicken kebabs! We had identified that we needed to be out in a specific time for an event and the staff made sure that we got out in lots of time without making us feel rushed. Looking forward to returning soon.

The food arrived lukewarm. Pretty disappointing. Chicken was dry. Ordered chicken skewers for our small child and didn't realize they would be served on massive metal skewers... would have been nice of them to take the meat off; they knew it was the child they were serving. Overall the ambiance and our server were great. The food was disappointing, but location location?

Menu is not extensive but very well thought out and a provides a variety of interesting options. All our choices (calamari, lentil soup, beef kabobs and duck confit) were very well prepared and presented. Service was a bit underwhelming. While the restaurant was not full, and our server was obviously working very hard, he was covering tables both inside and outside and it was obvious he was stretched too thin ( as were all the servers). I would strongly recommend the restaurant consider a more effective way to assign sections to servers and/or bring in additional serving staff.

Two of us ordered the BTW Signature salad for $12.00. With a name like that you would think that it would be spectacular. It was to come with Quinoa, chick peas, arugula and cheese. There was a few specs of quinoa and a few chick peas. We complained and the waitress brought us some quinoa. Besides that the salad was extremely small for $12.00. No a meal at all!

Due to extenuating circumstances my companion and I were unavoidably delayed and were 30 minutes late for our reservation. We were delighted to find that the team at By the Way had been able to hold our table and made us feel welcome. This was our first visit to By the Way and we were extremely happy with both the food and the service. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was wonderful. We had the Meza Plate and then tried the Fish of the Day and the Kufta Kebobs and all of it was very flavourful and perfectly cooked. The menu has great variety on it and making a single choice was difficult. The restaurant is small but very comfortable and the noise level is delightfully low. It was a wonderful change to be able to carry on a conversation without having to yell at my companion. We will definitely be back to By the Way soon..

Excellent soup and hummous appetizer. Chicken dinner was just ok, oversalted. Tried vegan carrot cake and the cake part is excellent, frosting just so-so. Place was packed on a Saturday night, definitely make a reservation. Typically all meals are great.

Where to eat and drink in the Annex during Hot Docs

Where to eat and drink in the Annex during Hot Docs

This venerable Annex café has stood the test of time thanks to its cozy ambiance and tasty menu of contemporary Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare. Open since 1979, the airy dining room is comfortable but a little more sophisticated than the nearby takeout spots and student haunts. Lunch and dinner menus feature freshly prepared meze platters of hummus, babaganough and falafel balls served alongside regionally inspired salads and grilled meat kabobs. If it’s warm enough, grab a spot on the charming side patio and bask in the twinkling lights.

Weekday wakeup: Great spots to get breakfast in the Annex

This intimate diner is a great spot to have a hearty breakfast with friends after a long night out. There’s limited seating, so it tends to be very quiet and makes for relaxed dining. The extensive menu has plenty of breakfast and brunch options for all tastes and appetites, including Eggs Charlotte, omelettes, hash browns and bagels. The wait staff is always happy to refill your cup, so it’s an ideal spot for some caffeine therapy when you're still trying to wake up.

Bomb Bathurst eats: Annex restaurants for lunch and dinner

Contemporary Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare is the name of game at this Annex mainstay, a cozy restaurant and patio on the Bloor Street strip proper. You’ll see locals dining here at all hours of the day, since the spot serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. We suggest a few selections of mezes (falafel, Israeli salad, marinated beets, and some seriously legendary hummus) – you’ll quickly discover why By The Way has earned a reputation for some of the hood’s best healthy meets oh-so-satisfying grub.
