One sign of a good restaurant is the quality of its staff. If they’ve been there a while, you know you’re entering an establishment that’s trusted and focused on delivering a great experience. And if you find a spot where a staff member thought so highly of it he wanted to buy it, like Nathan Arulappu did at Café la Gaffe, then even better.

Nathan started working at the restaurant and immediately fell in love with its ambiance, food selection, location and team atmosphere. So when the opportunity came up in 2004 to take a more active role in the business, he leapt at it.

“When I went to university, I worked here,” says Nathan. While most of us leave our university jobs behind when we graduate, Nathan was drawn so strongly to Café la Gaffe, it felt like home. His connection to his team is strengthened by the fact that he has maintained his original position in the kitchen, remaining hands-on preparing the food, instead of hiding away in the back.

His employees appreciate seeing him working alongside them, and they can see how invested he is in the restaurant. “We work together as a team,” says Nathan of the staff and owners at Café la Gaffe.

Everytime I think of this place I salivate

Great food! The Lamb Shank, the Chicken and pasta, the Risotto..ALL AMAZING! A must visit. I work close to this restaurant and my co-workers grab lunch from here once in awhile and each time I have been impressed. The fact that we go for lunch..indicates the fast service. The extension of the restaurant is..well imaginative.

Best of Baldwin

I've been to Cafe la Gaffe several times, for both lunch and dinner, and I've never been disappointed. The food is delicious. I'm a vegetarian and have tried a few of their pizzas as well as their mushroom risotto, and all have been great. I've never had problems with the service (except for one silly incident where the waitress kept forgetting to bring me a tea bag for my tea). Overall, I find the place cozy and pleasant. The only issue is that their portions are huge and I always end up so full!

If I'm on Baldwin, I'm probably at Cafe le Gaffe. End of story. It is a cozy little French restaurant that I fell in love with many years ago. Although I find the accompanying salad over-dressed, they're pizzas are great. Well layered with toppings, I've never had a bad experience.

Based on the lack of reviews you would think this place is a hidden gem. Fresh ingredients, interesting combinations, and an affordable wine list - what more could you ask for? The goat cheese pizza with madras curry spices sounds odd, but it's a wonderful combination.

Comfortable atmosphere for getting together and talking with friends. The service is competent and easygoing - attentive and not pushy. The food is very good for the money. Everything we had tasted as it should have.

Sumerlicious menu. I did not get items ordered as they were out of stock.The waiter did not inform e of this and simply substituted potatoes for rice which I hate. Quality was sub par compared to all previous visits.

It was a busy night with Summerlicious on and there was only one server. She did her best but the drinks were cold as it was sitting on the counter for a while. The dessert was also not correct temperature. When the creme brulee came out it was like soup not the way it's supposed to be. Very disappointing.

Went for Summerlicious birthday. Server/owner did not stoop mentioning how many things they do not do for Summerlicious .(bread with first course!) In ad it said their cocktails were 5$ between 3:and 5:30p- Not for Summerlicious although it was on the Summerlicious ad with menu. . Kept mentioning how they barely covered their costs during Summerlicious . Instead of being generous and encouraging more patrons by our recommendations, they did the opposite. In addition , told us we had to leave within 2 hours although the patio was totally empty from our arrival before 5:30 until we left. Server shamefacedly told us that the 2 hours would be waived.. Food was very good . Pork was excellent. Deserts excellent. No bread in the place, as they do not order it during Summerlicious..

I never write bad reviews for restaurants but this was one of the worst meals I've had in years. We came for summerlicious and the menu looked great, but everything was extremely disappointing. The Caprese salad consisted of spring mix and grainy tomatoes. I got the duck confit - it was overcooked and had a strange and off putting sauce. My friend got the talapia and it was tasteless. For dessert I had Creme Brule, which is one of my all time favourite desserts, and it tasted so off I couldn't finish it. The meal was WAY more money than I usually spend on dinner and I was very disappointed.

We're from Montreal visiting and saw that it was summerlicious. After choosing from a lengthy list of restaurants we chose Caffe La Gaffe. We were going to be late because of traffic and I tried calling to let them know. There was no answer and when we got there, the place was closed. There was no indication online or on the phone to notify guests that they were closed for the day. We would have loved to try the place. Very unfortunate.

We reserved about 2 hours before dinner through the web. We got there they had no idea who we were. They did admit that they only check for Internet reservations in the morning and do not update. Maybe I should have used snail mail, FAX or even telegraph.

Our server Dave was soo pleasant from start to finish. He ensured that we were greeted and served appetizer, entre and dessert in a timely manner, while maintaining yhe cleanliness of the restaurant (tables were cleaned right after guests left). The food was sooooo GOOD! We were soo full. My hubby and I will be back soon.

In the original on line reservation, I asked to be seated in the front room, but the host ignored that request, and tried to seat us in the dark hallway room next to the kitchen counter. The front room had available seating and many guests emptied out. There was no problem with us sitting in the main front room. What is the point of a specific request if it is not honoured? It was annoying and upsetting to my guest to have to insist on the front room seating. I felt like leaving and not coming back to the restaurant.
