Schmaltz-fried rice with tender poached chicken is the signature dish at Jackpot Chicken Rice, and a one-of-a-kind dish in Toronto’s Chinatown district. Add a side of crispy chicken skin, pile on the ginger and scallion, and chili sauces, and you’ve got yourself of a gastronomically glorious meal.

Chef and owner Craig Wong says the house specialty is inspired by a trip to Asia, where chicken rice is better known as Hainanese chicken. He says the dish originated on the tropical island of Hainan, in southern China, and is now a staple in households, food courts, hotels and fine restaurants across the entire continent, from Singapore to Hong Kong.

“At Jackpot, we’ve taken our favourite features from all of the versions and made our own Jackpot chicken rice,” says Craig. It’s also a dish that was often served at the dinner table when he was a child growing up Scarborough, whose bounty of multicultural dishes inspired him to become a chef.

In addition to chicken rice and crispy chicken skin, the menu also features a number of other mouth-watering lunch and dinner dishes like Cereal Killa Prawns, coconut shrimp chips with peanut caramel and Kaya French Toast for dessert.

    seating in high table was a little too crowded for seven people. No AC in a hot weather and the spicy food certainly made every guest melt down. servers are friendly but not super attentive as the family style dinining requires a lot space for dishes. Food was very good.

    The service was great, even with a new server she was attentive. The music was extremely loud. Toronto has a blight and that is loud ambient music, in every place, like every restauranteur thinks that their playlist is so much specialer than everyone else's. Yes it is a good ODB remix, we screamed our appreciative comments about it over the cold, over salted broccoli. Oversalted. Everything. The chicken skins tasted like they were cooked the day before. The dumplings tasted cooked an hour before serving, and swam in a sauce that tasted like powdered bouillon. The broccoli was too salty to eat. The chicken rice was decent. The sliced peppers and accoutrements on the shrimp just fell off into the dusty residue; every shrimp itself was just salty cereal. We were explained that the heads were left on the shrimp. Who are you? Do you think we've never eaten a shrimp before? What is this restaurant supposed to be doing? Who is it for? Heavy smokers? People who don't know Singapore exists? Who don't know that chicken rice can be cooked as deliciously as this as a one-pot rice cooked meal that costs next to nothing? What are these drinks? Why is there foie gras on it? And why was it so, so expensive? Toronto is a beautiful city and this restaurant is ugly. May it fail quickly and mercifully

    The service and atmosphere were pretty good - it felt like we were very rushed at the end however (to free the table; we had only been dining for about an hour and the waitress was very insistent on us paying and didn't bother to ask us if we wanted anything else). The food was not worth the price but was quite tasty. Highly recommend the broccoli and pot stickers.

    Highest kudos to Tom for choosing such amazing staff. Cara (?) was a fantastic server and a huge help with this being our first time. It was definitely nice to see familiar faces from the Union Market crew from last summer. The Fire Roasted Chicken was absolutely amazing, I would have loved a little more spice though. The schmalty rice, I almost ran to the kitchen to find a lifetime supply, it was fantastic. I will without a shadow of a doubt be returning.

    I've been there several times and the food and service has always been consistently excellent. Everytime I've been, Tyrell does an amazing job making us feel at home. I will say the food is a bit pricey vs the portions, but so are most restaurants in Toronto of this caliber. 100% recommended for anyone!

    Went to Jackpot yesterday as a group of 7 with a reservation at 730pm. We weren't seated until 8pm (understandable, it was busy and the restaurant is quite small). The service during the meal was excellent, friendly and efficient. The food was equally excellent. Once the meal was done we ordered more drinks. Soon after we were asked to leave to free up the table. Our drinks had just arrived!!!! So when all is said and done what was mostly a great experience ended with a bit of sourness. I would still recommend going here, but maybe as a couple or a smaller group so you don't get kicked out.

    Unique food experience... Took my 9 year old daughter who is quite picky about food, and with the waiter's (who was beyond terrific) help, we were able to choose 3 delicious dishes that even passed my daughter's critique. The broccoli tempura, fire roasted chicken and the smaltzy rice all were delicious!
