Neither as noisy nor as dimly lit as other restaurants of its ilk, this much-loved Cabbagetown izakaya is Toronto's version of its Vancouver originator, rises above the rest with its emphasis on freshness, quality and presentation. Kingyo's menu boasts a range of unique dishes, from goma ramen salad to short ribs. The pressed mackerel, tsukemono pickles, stone bowl sea urchin don and sea urchin shooters are consistent favourites. Guests get an eyeful here, watching marvels like beef tongue being grilled on a hot stone. Good news travels fast, so there are generally lots of enthusiastic diners under the restaurant's high ceilings and in the company of its blinking Pachinko machines. more... See more text

I took my visitors from Japan and they were so impressed by Kingyo. We took pictures of each order because they were so unique like art... Authentic Japanese tasty food with beautiful presentation, nice atmosphere, super friendly waitress and waiters. Highly recommended! We will definitely come back again!!

Took out my cousin, Connie for her birthday lunch and Kingyo did not disappoint. The food was as usual excellent (am a repeat customer), the service exceptional including the special birthday dessert the Chef prepared. Now Connie told me that she and her friend will be going back regularly, for sure.

We received the reservation confirmation but they didn't have us down on the list which was a bit odd considering I've been to this place before and made reservations with no issues. Not sure if this is a YP issue or an issue with their staff. Service could also be better but again, I have had good service here in the past, so could just be an off day.

Went to Kingyo for a before show dinner. Let the hostess know of our time constraint. Not only was the food awesome, but the service is super friendly and quick. Would definitely recommend Kingyo to all my friends and family!

Excellent everything. The best Japanese food I have tried in Toronto. Sashimi is so fresh and melts in your mouth. The seafood don is very unique and delicious. Tan tan ramen is a little bit too salty for me, but the flavour is still good. The service is cordial as well.

We have been coming to Kingyo for years and have always enjoyed the quality authentic Japanese food at reasonable prices. However, in our most recent visit we felt the quality of our experience has deteriorated made most obvious by the following: 1) The drastic price hike. For example, the tonkatsu meal increased in price from $17 to $21 and cabbage shred refills which used to be free now cost $2. 2) The removal of some of our favourite menu items such as the tan tan noodles. 3) The lack of adequate heating in the recent subzero temperatures. It was so cold in the restaurant we kept our jackets on throughout the whole meal. 4) The removal of the pachinko machines in the basement. The pachinko machines added to the charm of the place. 5) The lack of adequate lighting in the men's washroom. I don't know if this was done purposely or not but it was almost pitch dark in the men's washroom. All in all, our feeling was that while the food was still delicious, the restaurant was trying very hard to nickle and dime its customers.

When I called to say I’m running behind my reservation time, the girl rudely said she would cancel my reservation if I don’t show up in 20 mins. Service was extremely slow. I waited an hour for my food to arrive. My friend had her food after 30 mins and ended up waiting another 30 Mins for my food to be ready.

It was good. The service was a little sloppy and the noise level is very loud but the food was great. Lunch was just over $100. for 2 (with a beer each, tax and tip). So a little pricey but the bento box is very good.

This Cabbagetown spot reflects a traditionally minded izakaya inspired by classic Japanese cuisine. Featuring a variety of fresh fish, meat, and vegetables, each dish is built of a few simple items that accumulate into exquisite flavours. Diced beef tenderloin served with grated daikon, shisho leaf, and Japanese steak sauce is a superb dish that balances light and heavy on the palette. With its dark wood and bamboo, Kingyo replicates the comfort and luxury of eating in Japan’s urban centres.
