Meet the owner

Opening Mambo Lounge was no first step into Cuban food and culture for owner Andres Gonzales. In the 1990s, after graduating from university as a nuclear engineer, he quickly shifted gears to promote tourism in his native country, Cuba. Andres helped develop Cayo Coco and Havana as major tourist destinations and was the director of one of the biggest hotels in Cuba. In 2001, he was promoted to Canada to run a major campaign for Cuban tourism.

Andres and his family fell in love with Toronto and decided to stay. But there was a piece missing. “I was missing my culture,” he explains. “Cubans enjoy life. It doesn’t matter who your parents are, or the situation you are in. We try to get the best out of life.” At first, he decided to start a place for him and his friends. “It was a place for us to hang out on the weekends and enjoy Cuban music and food.”

It wasn’t too long before the gathering of Cuban friends grew to the next level. “At the time, the Danforth was a hot spot,” recalls Andres. “We started to build a new hangout where people could experience a piece of Cuba.” In 2006, Mambo opened its doors to the Danforth community. While now much bigger than the original “friend” concept, it remains true to its family roots.

My criterion is based on 1 day of visit only, and even just a couple of hours so, it has a lot of relativity. - Darkness catches you as soon as you enter, and for those who doesn't see well anymore, might be quite uncomfortable to find out what's in your food. - On the other hand, however, the food was just excellent. A little bit spicy for Cuban diet in general but very tasty! Maybe a prior warning from the waitress is the solution. It is a place we just can't miss visiting if wandering around. Having worked in the hospitality industry and representing the Cuban culture for over 26 years, I left the place with thousand of ideas in my head, and the desire to have interacted more with the owner who, even without knowing me, left what he was doing and accompanied me outside to make sure I got the proper taxi. Typical of Cuban people :) Thanks for the Cuban night, MANGO! Note: Good interpretation of Cuban music by the guitar guy.

Not for a young couple, many older Roudy folks loud very dim small restaurant music was more for older folks slow not lively . My husband is Cuban and even he wasnt entertained. The portions was small rice was hard thought I was eating plastic . Cuba may lack resources but their pina coladas are unforgettable flavourful ,rich and creamy . Here we paid for what tasted liked like watered down pineapple juice poured over crushed ice . For an unsatisfactory meal we paid way too much . The best part was the flan which by the way we took to go because we were not enjoying the atmosphere.

This was our second time at Mambo Lounge and We had an awesome evening. Live latin music is a plus to those who like to hit the dancing floor. Besides that, our server, Ruben, was very attentive, pleasant and cheerful. Food was very tasty, traditional Cuban food, and I just loved their casava sticks. Keep in mind it is a Latin restaurant, so the atmosphere is casual, and food is served by a very friendly staff. My Birthday celebration was a success and everyone had a great time in the dancing floor. Andres and his wife Gipsy are excellent hosts and made our evening very special. Highly recommended!!!

they literally had to go to the "bank" to get 40$ worth of change, we had a group of 4 people and they added 15% tip prior to bringing the bill and we were unable to change this. slow service, perhaps need more staff on a Saturday night.

My husband and I chose this restaurant for a winterlicious date night and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent and very speedy. A staff member dimmed the lights for us when our meals arrived and the food was delicious! Highly recommend! A highlight amongst all was the Yucca fries!

Rediculous! Had a reservation at 6.00 pm after 20 min waiting at the door we left. Later, after finishing eating at a pla0ve just beside it, very good by the way, we checked at 7.15 pm still no one there. If you closed your doors or can not open for the night you could at least let your reserved guest know. Or a note o the door... Bery disappointing!

My friend and I thought we’d check out an authentic Cubian restaurant for dinner. We choice dinner from the Summerlicious menu. The food was prepared adequately but certainly nothing special and the only thing Cubian about our meals was the music. I had a salad to start with some type of canned mango dressing. Then I had sea bass that was cooked well. It was serviced with a coconut rice however there was no coconut flavour. Along with that came a small portion of bok choy and carrots. I’ve been to Cuba a few times and never saw boy choy served. For dessert was a chocolate mousse cake from Costco. The service was good and fast, no complaints there.
