Meet the owner

Menu options at your average fish and chips restaurant are usually limited to haddock or cod, tartar sauce, coleslaw, French fries and not much else. In that respect, Off the Hook owner Steven Karataglidis and his staff deserve praises for putting a modern spin on traditional fast food. In the process they’ve created one of the few gourmet fish and chips joints in Toronto. In a neighbourhood where Mediterranean and exotics cuisine abound, Off the Hook’s menu stands out.

Since the restaurant's opening in 2011, health-conscious options have always featured prominently on the menu. Organic batters, gluten-free dishes and local produce are key ingredients in their recipe to success. “Steve, the owner of the restaurant, created the menu," says Chad Welton, manager at Off the Hook. "One day we realized that some pizza chains’ dipping sauces are quite a big thing so we created a few dipping sauces and those have been huge for us and also gluten-free batter options, which represent about 50 per cent of our sales.”

Soggy, doughy batter. Fish was cooked until it was like cardboard. Great service and cool vibe, just stay away from the Fish and Chips.

Fries a little overdone, not a huge deal. Cajun battered fish was awesome! Service was excellent, I go for tons of tartar sauce and my server was happy to oblige. Loved having Frankenstein in black and white on the TV but the music was meh (hey, that's personal taste, not really something you can please everybody on).

The battered fish needed more flavour, it was kinda bland. The fries were great but the poutine tasted weird. The service was good and staff were friendly but I did feel rushed while trying to order. Overall it was an okay experience, would go again.

Gluten free fish & chips were amazing! Hot and crunchy on the outside and soft & moist on the inside. Onion rings were crunchy on the outside, sweet and fluffy on the inside. We'll be back - thanks!

Everything was great, except table was near washroom, and the odour was distasteful - better door instead of curtain or ventilation would have been more comfortable

The staff at Off the Hook make you feel welcome from the minute you walk in the door. They know how to do fish and chips...with some unique seasonings and accompaniments. The space is comforting and casual...like the food...and they feature a short list of local, unique craft beers.
