Meet the owner

After moving to Toronto in 1988, Asokan Rasieh spent just one month as a dishwasher before becoming a line cook. Within six months, his passion ignited the kitchen and he became a chef.

“I just fell in love with working in the kitchen,” says Asokan. “It was such an exciting atmosphere. I knew right away I would always work in the restaurant industry.”

Asokan worked as a head chef for several years until the restaurant’s owners decided they wanted to sell. Asokan didn’t hesitate to buy it, and in 1993 he opened Peartree Restaurant.

“After changing the name and the atmosphere of the restaurant, I knew I never wanted to leave. This would be my first and last job in Canada,” he says.

One and often both owners are present. Yesterday both were there. It makes such a difference in offering consistent quality and good value. Well done, Peartree!! I had some out of town visitors and wanted to show them around Cabbagetown afterwards. They didn't disappoint. :)

If the owner of the Peartree Restaurant (I assume he was the owner) had even remotely pretended to be happy to have customers or looked like he had any pride in his establishment I might not have proceeded to write this scathing review. Barely a nod or a hello were given as we were seated. If there is anything I can't stand in any establishment serving the public is when the bosses (men) hardly lift a finger while the server (one woman) is running the floor. Julie, our waitress, gets an A for her effort. Without much experience and without any support from above she could not help but keep us waiting and get our orders mixed up. She looked very young and I commend her on her effort but the mayhem was obvious. As a matter of fact there came a point when one person in our party cleared our own dirty glasses that had piled up on our table and brought them to the bar under the cold stare of the owner (I again assume). I might add this tidying up was done apologetically, not with a huff or an argument. As cold as our arrival was, our exit was equally chilly. Nice farewell from a place where we just spent money on mediocre food and a decent amount of wine, and beer to start. Did I mention the dirty glasses? I noticed this place walking by one afternoon and thought it looked charming and I love to support local businesses. Needless to say we will not be going back. Oh, if you are reading this Julie, get work elsewhere and get better training because you can do a whole lot better. We'd come to see you and give you a cheer.

Great place, very clean and staff are very personable. The food is delicious and some dishes have an exotic spicy flavour you won't find in most canadian restaurants. The chef really knows what he's doing. The owner makes an effort to get to know the clientele and educate you on the menu. I'll keep going back.

Excellent soups. Attentive to, and creative with, individual food preferences. Veggies cooked "just right". A bit too much use of soya sauce in the stir fries, and more butter in the sauces than is needed. Delicious special desserts. Good prices. Many thanks for a very special evening

We both enjoyed the homemade soups (lentil and the butternut squash). The dinners were good-sized portions with lots of vegetables that were tender but crisp, the maple pork and the chicken were tender and tasty. And the chocolate mousse cake was decadent.

I was dining with my brother before going to a show. I have been to the Pear Tree before and quite like it. It's a relaxing environment and not huge like the big chain restaurants that are all the same. Service is very good - friendly and attentive but not in our face. We had appetizers (bruchetta and crab cakes) to share. The bruchetta came as 4 huge pieces - had we known that, we may have passed on the crab cakes (also 2 very good sized cakes). But, they were both very good. My brother had the pepper steak and I had butter chicken. The vegetables with both entrees were fresh and cooked perfectly (not overdone). The pepper steak was great - cooked with just a bit of pink and seasoned properly. He said the fries were also very good. My butter chicken was okay (hence the "3" rating overall). The chicken was bit dry and the sauce was a bit 'flat'. That said, I would still recommend the Pear Tree without any qualms.

We went for brunch on New Year's Eve day. We sat in the glass conservatory at the back. We were the only customers the entire time. It was terrific. The natural light and direct view onto the garden, even in winter, is lovely. Both meals were tasty, with good portions and fair prices. The waitress was friendly and checked on us regularly throughout the meal, topping up coffee, etc. This restaurant is an old favourite from days when we lived/worked in the neighbourhood, so returning always feels like "coming home".
