Meet the owner

Au Petit Extra has been enlivening and nourishing its neighbourhood since 1985. This bistro with European accents barely seated 40 when it opened, but over the years it has turned into a spacious restaurant adjacent to the Lion d'Or theatre.

Since its inception, Au Petit Extra has been a unifying place where all sorts of energizing initiatives are born — it soon became the rallying point for artists, journalists and the business community of Ville-Marie. "Our niche is really that of a bistro with a good value. We find that the customers are very happy with this. We don't wish to pay for gourmet," says co-owner André Baillargeon.

In the '80s, the first owners, Jean Filippi and Pierre Charron, wanted to instill beauty in their surroundings and make passersby smile as much as the customers. "I think they wanted to make this area, once very hard and poor, a little better, a little more habitable for everyone," says André.

A very disappointing anniversary dinner. Service and food quality has gone downhill. Big time. The cod was so dry and tough, so was my duck breast. Our jaws were tired after half way of the meal. Our server was kind of cold and inattentive. Had to wait 15 mins to order, and he never refill the wine or water for us. We took the issue of the fish to the server and he just said nothing, and turned to ask the hostess to talk to us instead. Overall experience was pretty bad.

This dinner was an affair of the gastronomy section of the Festivale de lumières, hosted by Stanley Paen. The hosting was great and I enjoyed the evening. But my food, especially the main dish, was really disappointing and not at all gourmet. I chose the cod--it was tasteless and dry. Maybe freezer-burnt? Not fresh. The vegetables and other things that came with it were quite good. Voilà! You say you wanted to know, which is a good thing. Because I definitley wouldn't put out that much money for that quality of a meal again at your resto unless I was sure Au petit extra was going to up its game.

It's hard to find any fault ... we were a group of friends and really enjoyed the food and restaurant ... and the Mtl a Tble menu was very good value. In particular, the vegetables accompanying the arctic char were delicious!

Classic French bistro. Pleasant atmosphere. Not too noisy (unlike many restaurants these days) so it was relatively easy to make dinner conversation. Extremely efficient service. All the food was very good, but the real highlight was the duck breast in a sauce made with bourbon, pecans, maple syrup and cayenne. It was served with a beautiful and tasty selection of market vegetables. The dish was truly outstanding.

Au Petite Extra is a long-standing favorite restaurant of mine, but it does seem to be getting a bit tired. While tried and true recipes are lovely, (and were delicious again) a "re-fresh"would be nice. Small details like the lack of paper towels in the washroom, and the fact that the soup of the day changed from the time we placed our order until the course arrived indicates a lack of dedication to detail and excellence. Similarly one server told us all the cheeses on the cheese plate were Quebecois cheeses, another server told us one was an Ontario cheese. Who to believe?

Real French decor! No fuss, just perfect! Even the front, with its champagne and wine inscription on the window is a reminder of the genuine Paris. Add to that the foie gras, duck breast and apple pie... enough said!

In this establishment on Ontario Street East, the first course is a choice of fish soup, foie gras and dates, or salmon gravlax served with Labrador tea sour cream. For the main course, the choice is yours between cod fillet, the saddle of rabbit stuffed with Saint-Benoît-du-Lac blue cheese, or fettuccine in squid ink with tomatoes and lemon confit. A brownie with Grand Marnier orange salad for dessert will be sure to round your evening off with a smile.

A neighbourhood fixture for the past 30 years, Au Petit Extra is a bistro which serves refined, French-inspired cuisine composed of classics and bold innovations. Hanger steak, duck breast and confit, sarladaise potatoes, blood sausage and tartare all offer a taste of France, especially when enjoyed with one of the wines that have been carefully selected by the sommelier, and followed by a dessert like crème brûlée or Paris Brest.
