Best places to eat gluten-free in Edmonton

Cooking truly delicious gluten-free dishes can be a challenge — but it’s one these Edmonton restaurants can handle. From diners to hotel restaurants to Chinese places, these are the establishments where everyone, celiacs or otherwise, can be sure to get a good meal.

The Harvest Room

1
10065 100 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 0N6

The Harvest Room’s menu underwent a renovation — it was modified to take as many dietary concerns as possible into consideration. There are gluten-free dishes, vegetarian dishes and raw dishes — if there is nothing that appeals to you, the chef will come speak with you about your needs and likes, then create a dish just for you.

Urban Diner

2
12427 102 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 0M2

An awesome chicken or salmon burger on a gluten-free bun, all for me? Damn straight. And, it tastes like the “real” thing, not like a dry hockey puck. Celiac-friendly sides include the tangy chickpea and quinoa salad.

Narayanni's Restaurant

3
10131 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 1W9

Buffets are usually the bane of the celiac. We don’t like them; they don’t like us. But, this is one of the few buffets in Edmonton that label which dishes are gluten-free. And it’s not just rice; there are actually lots of South African-Indian dishes that are prepared gluten-free here, including the yummy, crispy papadums — lentil crisps — and a variety of desserts.

Pearl River Restaurant

4
4728 99 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 5H5

I always thought gluten-free Chinese food was a myth, until I came to Pearl River Restaurant. Dishes like the fried broad rice noodles and chicken with peppercorn sauce are must-tries. They’re able to prepare dishes with gluten-free soy sauce and can suggest modifications to common dishes to prepare them without gluten.

Mikado

5
10350 109 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 4X9

While a lot of Japanese staples, such as sashimi, are naturally gluten free, it’s awesome and reassuring that Mikado offers a separate gluten-free menu. It takes all the worry out of what to order. My favourite avocado roll is made with gluten-free mayo to make it safe for me to eat. The chefs know to watch for cross contamination and provide gluten-free soy sauce.

Remedy Cafe

6
10310 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 1R2

Remedy is known for its delicious Indian dishes, many of which are gluten-free and/or vegan. They offer gluten-free wraps, as well as rice dishes, and everything is clearly labelled and colour coded on the chalkboard menu so that you know exactly what dishes are gluten-free. The chana masala wrap — chickpeas in masala curry wrapped up in gluten-free goodness — doesn’t fall apart instantly, unlike many other gluten-free wraps out there. And — bonus! — there are a huge number of gluten-free dessert options.

In April 2016, Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards for the Best Pizza in the World: The Top 14 Cities for Pizza placed Edmonton at number eight on the list. With a diverse number of fantastic pizzas to choose from, including hand-tossed, wood-fired pies with white or red sauce and fun toppings ranging from pineapple to pine nuts, you're sure to find one you adore. Buon appetito!
