Check out the coolest independent coffee shops in Calgary

When you crave excellent barista-poured coffee as well as a pleasant place in which to enjoy it, Calgary’s independent coffee shops deliver on both counts. Below is a selection of some of the city’s finest.

Higher Ground Coffee House Inc

1
1-1126 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary, AB T2N 3P3

Kensington Village owes its bohemian street cred to independent shops and restaurants such as Higher Ground Cafe. Configured and decked out like a living room, it’s a very popular coffee-to-go spot. The cafe is also spacious enough for casual business meetings yet cozy enough for first dates. The food menu includes sandwiches, salads and pastries.

Cadence Coffee

2
6407 Bowness Rd NW, Calgary, AB T3B 0E6

Self-declared servers of “superfine coffee,” Cadence in Bowness is certainly a super spot to enjoy a well-made coffee. Order a cappuccino, café au lait or a mug of Americano and settle down in the diner-style seating. Breakfast and lunch are served. Dishes include sandwiches, wraps and burgers, all with a healthy, contemporary vibe.

Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar Inc

3
909 10 St SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0L9

This sexy little coffee hangout in Inglewood also serves a sweet selection of wine (and a few other select alcoholic beverages) by the bottle or glass. As the name suggests, make an espresso your first stop. Food features include a daily carvery. Enjoy your coffee with live music Friday and Saturday evenings.

Bumpy's Cafe

4
1004 8 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1K2

It’s a way-cool café serving new-fangled diner dishes, but this place also takes its coffee service quite seriously. Baristas pour perfect cups of espresso, cappuccino and artful lattes lovingly finished with leafy foam swirls.

Kawa Espresso Bar Ltd

5
101-1333 8 Street SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1M6

A cool, contemporary coffee nook, Kawa also serves beer and wine and its food menu features a unique combo of Polish and Middle Eastern dishes. The non-coffee beverage menu also includes tea.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating. Here are a few restaurants, cafés and snack shacks located on or near our scenic cycling system. Image credit: iStock.com/mihailomilovanovic.
