Great late-night snack shacks in Calgary

Sometimes dinner just isn’t enough to tide you over. While Calgary is not blessed with nearly enough late-night eateries, we’ve found five of the best in town to satisfy those late-night hunger pangs. Suburbanites, you’ll have to hop in your car as most are located in or near the downtown core.

Kam Golden Inn

107A 2nd Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0B2

King of the late-night eateries, Chinatown’s Golden Inn has long been the post-night-out pit stop for hungry downtown revellers. The recently renovated restaurant satisfies after-dark cravings with quick service and classic Cantonese dishes. Monday to Thursday, until 3 am; Friday and Saturday, until 4 am; Sunday, until 2 am.

You & Me Restaurant

Overlooking Centre Street in sight of the Centre Street Bridge, U & Me serves a lengthy assortment of regional Chinese and South Asian snacks and entrees. Its nighttime menu includes dim sum items, congee (rice porridge) bowls and dishes such as crispy tofu, salt and pepper squid and Singapore-style noodles. Daily, until 4 am.

Tubby Dog

1022 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2T 0A5

The city’s hippest hotdog hangout features a walk-up takeout window for service well into the wee hours. Featured on You Gotta Eat Here for its wild, mile-high wiener toppings, it’s too cool for credit. Cash only, kids. Hours: Weeknights, 10 pm; Friday and Saturday, window service until approximately 3 am.

Blackfoot Truck Stop Restaurant

1840 9 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0T8

A true-blue truck stop diner, this is a favourite haunt of hungry big rig pilots, shift workers and insomniacs. Hearty and heaping platefuls of breakfast, lunch and dinner are served 24 hours a day. From the sirloin steak with eggs and beans to the hot hamburger sandwich, it ain’t fancy, but it is filling.

The Big Cheese

738 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B7

For all the salt, fat, starch and tummy-rubbing deliciousness you require after an evening of clubbing and pubbing, The Big Cheese is just the thing. Enjoy its take on the French Canadian French fry dish smothered in cheese curds and gravy and with toppings from Montreal smoked meat to Scottish curry. Monday to Wednesday until 9 pm; Thursday until 11 pm; Friday and Saturday until 3:30 am; Sunday until 9 pm.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating.
